Brother 5150 Drum and toner...Help!

Yesterday I had a paper jam and in the instruction booklet for my Brother 5150 it suggests taking out the drum and cartridge to clear the paper jam. I was able to clear it though by pulling the paper out of the back of the printer instead.

I'm bringing this up because eventually I'm going to need to replace the cartridge, and I couldn't budge the thing out of the printer. I opened the front flap as per the diagram shown in the instruction sheet, but I couldn't seem to get a grasp on anything to make the assembly come out. It almost felt like I was going to break the assembly or cartridge since I was pulling on it and it's made of plastic. Any suggestions for getting it out easily???

Thanks!

Betsy, I have the 5150 DLT and when I first got it felt the same way. But with this model you are removing not just the cartridge but also a housing carriage along with it (made of plastic).

When you open the front door (make sure its the actual panel and not the multi-purpose tray) above a silver metal bar you'll notice a small handle just enough for your fingers to slide beneath. Pulling this straight towards you will disengage the housing that holds the toner cartridge. Should not be a struggle though it will require a little tug.

Hope this helps

I have this happen every once in while with my Brother 5170. If you pull out the paper drawer you are using FIRST, then pull out the drum/cartridge, you can get at it much easier. Seems like most times mine is hanging up between the drawer and the cartridge and I just pull it right out. Hope this helps. (used to have a 5150 and did the same thing with it and it worked much easier). Don't know why it hangs up like that. Happy holidays.

Speaking of the Brother 5150 - I also have one and do any of you know how to adjust the print settings to run both legal and letter? I purchased a new computer and I have to adjust the print settings for the printer to read both print trays. Help, please!

I can't remember if anything else needs to be set, but if I go to File, Print, then Preferences, I show Letter size at the very top. Then down near the bottom it shows "Paper Source". Where it says 1st Page I have "Auto Select" and where it says 2nd Page I have "Same as first". I did this and things printed out just fine the first time.

Hope this helps.

Betsy

You can also do this through Control Panel, then Printers. Highlight your printer then right click. Then click on Printer Preferences. Then choose Same settings as I mentioned in previous post.

I am still not able to get this cartridge assembly out of my printer despite the helpful suggestions above. I guess I'll have to visit a Staples or Office Max to see if I can get a quick "lesson". Don't want to be caught fiddling with this when I have a closing!
