Colorado NSA's
Yesterday I received a letter/pack from the State of CO with information from NNA enclosed. Apparently, the State notary office has decided to "partner" with the NNA. There was a full page ad from NNA how recruiting new NSAs and how they can make the big bucks! So, this is probably going out to all CO registered notaries. What do you guys think this will create?

The SOS and NNA have been partnerning for some time -- at least according to NNA's propaganda that I've been receiving for the past two years or so.

Brenda,
I think that will really make the established Notaries angry. A large number of people through out the country are not happy with the NNA and I'm thinking that some will eventually file a class action suit against the NNA for false advertising and fraud..,etc.
There are so many misleading statements NNA sells to unsuspecting people it's just a shame what NNA is getting away with. My personal opinion is if you don't have some type of background and experience with loans and legal documents this Profession is NOT for the average person off the street. They have no idea whats involved with what we do, or the true cost, time, and really hard work that is involved.
Example see the posting RE:NNA and monster.com by Anon re:encounter with 30 second wonder-I personally find that experience just plain scary! The way NNA is cranking out notaries I'm not really surprised by their experience.
What in the world Colorado is thinking buy pairing up with NNA is a puzzle to me?? Can't wait to see that letter.
All I know is something has got to change and change Very soon. I am open to any and all suggestions on what to do about this problem.
The above statements are my opinion only.

Re: Colorado NSA's & every other state, too
Yes, I know I'm in Arkansas. Teddog has an interesting idea: Class Action Suit. The NNA is presenting itself as the be-all, end-all of notarydom. And, unless shot down, they WILL be! Ask any OLD real estate person you know about the Nat'l Realtors Assoc. I watched it happen 20 years ago... and am watching it happen with Notaries now. Most states just fall in line with whatever they (Realtors then; NNA now) want....after all, the NNA 'represents' notaries, so they must know what the notary wants. I've been on this soapbox for 11 years & quit a while back because nobody wanted to hear it. You're learning~~ Maybe NOW is the time to dust it off and tell you all WATCH OUT, please!

Wish I could... but I'm not now, nor have I ever been, nor will I ever be-- a member. So couldn't be part of the 'class'. I learned my lesson the hard way with "Realtors".

**What do you guys think this will create?**
A lot of calls to you CO folk wanting to know more about the business and how to get started. You will get a rash of these...
A lull while the $40-50 fees catch some of your work
A lot of mistakes to go back and do correctly.
A lot of frantic schedulers who hope and pray you'll go do the job when the half-hearted decided it's too much trouble.
Maybe the long-timers are not working smart enough...or maybe they are not imaginative enough. You'll get a chance to mentor the new ones because they'll call you...so...raise 'em right!.
Ideas :
Take all those "across the mountain" signings you can get and get the new ones to drive you to do a ride along. Tell them you sometimes get as much as $45 for a 3 hour trip like that...well...if you get to fax at least 45 pages back...but, bummer, sometimes you don't get that "fax" premium if there are only 44 pages.
Write a CO book on "how to... " Insist they purchase it.
Offer to tutor at $50/hr... too high? tell them about me and that they might want me to ring me up for $500 per hour--the going rate.
Insist they purchase a sign from Paul...
Insist they purchase five Mojos
Insist they purchase a book from Monica, Kathy, Joan and Laura.
Tell them the only boards for notaries are on MSN
Tell them to fax a resume to my mother for a sure place to get started with a job - be sure to call first because she has no idea how to work the fax machine...she'll keep them busy for two hours. (Somewhere on my blog I have a whole story about what a PITA faxing to and getting faxes from my mom is. )
Tell them the lender insists they must wear surgical rubber gloves to each signing - pull some used ones out of your purse / or pocket and demand they try them on...they are going to be only 1/2 price because you like them so much. You WILL take a check - $5 please.
Help them set up a fedex and ups account and then order 1000 of two or three things including boxes...the largest available. Ask if they can store yours.
Endorse SOX and the others on the No No.
Help with first signing and insist that YOUR name is the new one's name... ask everyone repeatedly "are you drunk? I'm not. She is though!!!"
Blurt out, "Can I double check your driver license?? That picture is really bad...and you have gained so much weight. I know you're not pregnant 'cos you are TOOOOO old."
When the bwr says something, repeat it right after they say it.
Ask for water with ice and a twist of avocado. If they just happen to have it use the avocado to polish your shoes or the legs of the table.
Call the new one "Jackson" during the signing no matter what their name or sex.
Snore loudly, chase a pet, belch, ask if they ever buy second-hand socks or underwear. Ask "Do you sell your second-hand underwear? What about pantyhose? How much?"
And, if they get through your "mentoring" they are totally cut out for this business...then you will know if you will have REAL competition or not.
======== No one new get offended please!!! It's forumette syndrome and I cannot help it on certain days.

Hey Brenda! LOL, how right you are. Now when I get a local call , my first question is "are you a Notary." So you're correct you have to laugh to keep from crying.

Gigi Dennis wrote a letter back in November of last year announcing the partnership with the NNA. The focus was not on the NSA aspect, but rather on basic courses (i.e. avoiding costly mistakes).
Currently there is no requirement for Colorado Notaries to pass an exam, or to even take any courses. There are a few classes for persons wanting to become Notaries that will be offered by the SoS. But they are free. The material covered will be the basic knowledge that all Notaries have to have.
There was legislation earlier last year that would have required persons who wanted to become Notaries to take a course and pass an exam (HB 05-1007). The governor vetoed it.
The NNA is obviously aware of all of this. They can advertise their training courses, and even get the SoS to promote them. But how many people are going to take the initiative to take courses, and have to pay for them, if it's not required? There are no Notary mills in Colorado, churning out Notaries by the dozens. No need for them. If you're an entrepreneur, trying to make a buck off of training people to become Notaries, forget it.
I haven't received the packet in the mail yet, but my guess is that it's a NNA campaign to pursuade the Notaries here to get involved in the NSA side of the profession/business, and get them to use more of their products. I talked to one Notary who works at a bank who wasn't even aware of what a "Signing Agent" is. Of course this means that Colorado Notaries will have to not only be members of the NNA to take advantage of this opportunity, but they'll have to join the NNA Signing Agent section as well. An additional $39/year. Of course they didn't advertise that there are other ways in which you can become a SA that don't involve being a member of the NNA.
It seems to be part of the NNA plan. They want to become the "Microsoft" of the Notary profession. It appears that they're on that course.

Leon...exactly how Realtors began...
Then came the Realtor-suggested & then State-mandated Continuing Education...really stupid stuff @$300 a pop. The CE hours increased & so did the $$. Then came 'all the forms' to be added to the contracts. Illinois (briefly) decided that this was too much for dumb r.e. people to handle & then you had to track down a lawyer to 'draft' (a pre-printed, fill in the blanks) contract. Fortunately, the lawyers decided that this was a PITA... I could go on, but will simply say THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING. And "Realtors" are now the standard. It started as a snowball and ended up being an avalanche....

NAR has actually done something for the profession unlike the NNA. Comparing NAR to NNA is just plain Stupid!

Colorado NSA's
I have signed up for the "notary" seminar at the Broker in Boulder on Feb 1....I want to see if they do promote the SA side of their business. The letter stated that there will be several of these seminars in the Denver Metro area. Yikes!
