I forgot the thumbprint.
Well I had my first loan signing today. With being nervous I forgot you need to get a thumbprint for the DOT in my journal. Is that ok or do you think I should call them back up and go get it. I already had said they don't need to for some of the signings. I did do thumbprints on all the jurats we had to do. I don't want to get in trouble but I don't want to look like a idiot to these two sisiters either. Thanks for anyones help.

looking like an idiot or not, you should go back. your journal is your source, as a professional, for verification of the documents you notarize; it should always be complete with a thumb print.

Don't worry about how you look to the BO's, go back and get it corrected....
If you have to shw your journal to anyone you will look much worse....
It won't happen again to you..... almost a guarantee....

Why does a DOT need a thumbprint, it requires an ACK not a
jurat and oath!

Re: Why does a DOT need a thumbprint, it requires an ACK not
Because CA statutes say so:
"If the document to be notarized is a deed, quitclaim deed, or deed of trust affecting real property, the notary public shall require the party signing the document to place his or her right thumbprint in the journal. If the right thumbprint is not available, then the notary public shall have the party use his or her left thumb, or any available finger and shall so indicate in the journal. If the party signing the document is physically unable to provide a thumb or fingerprint, the notary public shall so indicate in the journal and shall also provide an explanation of that physical condition."
Gov't Code § 8206 (a)(2)(G)

I don't quite understand what you are saying here. You didn't get a thumbprint on the deed but on all notarized documents that required a jurat, you did get thumbprints? The only line items that require a thumbprint by CA law, are deeds. You don't have to get a thumbprint for every document you notarize. If you did, in fact, get a thumbprint from that borrower, even though it is not on the deed line item, I would just note this in your journal.

I agree with Jan
I have had borrowers with 'bad thumb aim' and print the wrong line item. No big deal, you got their thumbprint, right? Congrads on your first signing!

Sarah, many notary's get the thumbprint whether it's required (by law) or not. It's just a good practice, I do it for every journal entry now and haven't had anyone complain.

Please read your state requirements!!!
As Paul posted. Your State requires a thumbprint in the "JOURNAL", not on the document. The easy fix is to obtain a "Thumbprint" in your "Journal" for all notarizations that you perform.
Congrulations on your 1st. signing!!
Now take the time and learn your state requirements.

Re: Please read your state requirements!!!
I knew the thumbprint was not suppose to be on the document but I couldn't remember which ones needed thumbprints in my book. I thought it was for all jurats. That won't happen again. I will get it on all of the entries in my book. I was rather nervous and there was a mountain of paperwork 175 pages for the 1st and 125 for the 2nd. Anyway thanks for your imput.
