OT: Don't rain on my Rose Parade

Tomorrow may be a sad day in the history of Southern California - more than likely there will be rain (alot of rain) at the Rose Parade. A first in 55 years, the parade may be rained upon, or rained out. That's older than me, folks.

As a California Native the Rose Parade has a lot of meaning for me. The tradition of waking up and smelling coffee and cinnamon rolls on New Years Day is almost (but not quite) as important as waking up and seeing what Santa brought. We all sat together...Dad with his red-rimmed eyes from too much bourbon on New Years Eve (and Mom trying not to notice) to tune into the big New Years Day parade. Channel 5 and 11 were the favorites; in more recent years, it was Stephanie Edwards and what's-his-name.

It was a big deal...sitting together and watching the floats, muching on rolls and still playing with Christmas Toys. Later in the Day, we would help Mom take down The Tree and have the usual Roast Beef for dinner. It was Tradition, you know??

We in So Cal are going to get alot of rain tomorrow - and I feel bad for the kids, equestrians, bands, military, schools, and more bands that they may not have the usual spotlight to strut their stuff at the Parade. Everybody pray that we'll get a special window of time to enjoy that New Years Tradition, the Tournament of Roses Parade.

Maybe if it rains, we won't get the usual hundreds of thousands east coast folks moving here in the spring. If we do, there's lots of 800K homes for sale.

Susan, Here is a 3:30 am salute of mourning for you - I hope to sleep in late and this memorial post needed a respectful response...at least a sleepy nod. (The dogs cold-nosed me up and out the door . The little one planted a paw on the mouse pad of the laptop when we all laid back down. The LCD flashed back on and I saw your post and could not help myself.)

It's a nice little memory post; a very good one. Tradition in California sounds very rich and a lot like some of the Texas tradition. I am not a holiday sports or a parade watcher (except for the Aggies on Thanksgiving) but so many are!

My sister (the star and fame nut--and I do say that affectionately!) will be devastated. Her high school band traveled out to march in the parade and the half-time of the Rose Bowl somewhere around the year 1973. That was the only year I watched the parade...just hoping she'd trip on national television...but I digress...

Thank you for the memories! This has reminded me of the words of a song "It never rains in Southern California..." Puts a little bit of meaning into those words.

Keep us posted.

I used to work on the floats when I was a teen. That was the most fun. Then we would go walk the blvd. till time for the parade. such good memories. I'm hoping and praying it won't get rained on too. Hey, I graduated high school in 73.

Here's hoping it will stay away today, we in northern Ca. are drenched with the wet stuff. Mud slides, levies breaking and over flowing, dams and rivers to the max.
We usually watch the parade so it would be good to watch something nice in the mist of this wet stuff here. We are lucky we still have power.

Hmmm, I was in first grade in 1973. I had finally escaped my hellish kindergarten teacher, "Fraulein" Fanny Sniderman (spelling?).

My father, a former Marine, taught me a song that the Fraulein did not like, so every time I sang or hummed it, I got my ear twisted. So then I started calling her Fanny and asking her why her parents named her after her butt. Jeez the Fraulein had no sense of humor whatsoever.

I spent most of kindergarten in the principals office. Mr Banukawich (spelling?) let me sing over the intercom, eat chocolates, answer his phone, and rearrange his desk as I saw fit. I also got to sit at his desk and do all my school work -- he'd go sit in the outer office with the secretary. Boy, did he ruin me for school after that. I would get in trouble on purpose so I could go to the office. ;-)

If I went to school and did that these days they would've put me in counseling and put me on psych meds. Thank goodness for the good old days.

It's a soggy mess out there. You have to admire the die-hards (viewers and participants) for putting a smile on what must be very cold faces. All those HS kids will be out sick with colds next week.

Still it's pretty.
