OT- Pet health insurance?

My 3 year old chihauhau started having seizures yesterday so off to the vet we went. Xrays, blood tests, UA, etc. $530.00. We called today to get the results of the tests and found out she has a urinary tract infection, but to get her medicine, she needs a urine culture. $130.00. Still don't know why she has seizures. Does anyone have pet insurance? What has been your experience? Worth it? TIA

Two years ago, I purchased a rubber cat toy called Crazy Cat (by Hartz). He ate the rubber ball (about the size of a bubble gum machine ball) and caused a major blockage that warranted surgery. At the time he became ill, I had no idea that he swallowed the ball. The Vet did extensive test for diabetes, kidney failure, ect. Meanwhile, the bill was getting bigger and poor Booger (my kids named him) was no better. Finally, the vet did exploratory surgery and found the rubber ball. One Hartz toy that was only $2.99 ended up costing me over $2,400. I purchased pet insurance immediately after. I have not needed it, but its there in case something happens. I highly recommend having the protection.

I have pet insurance on both of my "girls" and I would not be without it. For all the horror stories of accidents, illnesses, etc I would not want the health needs of my canine family to be determined by the cost of treatment. If you love your pet, get the insurance.

Thank you John. We picked up the medicine for our Chi ($158.33) and within 30 minutes she promptly brought it back up. Again we called our vet, 'come in tomorrow and we'll try something else". We love our animals and will go to extremes to get them well. My hubby and I wonder how people without money or credit take care of their pets.???

Sad to say the pound is full of pets that people can't afford to take care of.

The answer is they don't. It's not just people without money. I can't tell you how many race horse owners I have seem try all kinds of witch doctor treatments before they call the vet and by the time the vet is called it's too late. Then they boo hoo about losing such a valuable horse. I call the vet if one of mine coughs.
