I know there are several pet lovers here:

That's awful. I only feed my girls Science Diet, so I guess I never think of them getting anything other than good, high quality food. This is definitely worth sharing with others.

All of our dogs have always been *preppy* dogs as well and never had anything other than Science Diet. However, our vet is always pushing this *toxic* food and thankfully, I've never weakened to save a few bucks.

I just heard the story on the TV. It just makes you want to cry! Tell everyone you know about it just in case they might have purchased some Diamond animal food.

The thing that gets me is that Diamond has known about the problem for THREE weeks and the problem is just now becoming known -- even to vets. I think a lot of attorneys are going to be getting into this action.

Thanks for posting this Carolyn. I just watched the news and saw the story. I can't believe this has happened on such a large scale. Very sad.

pet food vigilante freak (me)

anyone interested in learning more than you care to know about the industries ugly 'secrets' just e-mail me. Research "rendering", learn the definitions of ingredients used in pet food, research Mad Cow ... Hill's Science Diet will come off your list, as will MOST 'popular' brands and all inexpensive brands.

Is Eukanuba and Iams ok?

Re: pet food vigilante freak (me)

both list corn meal in top 3 ingredients, and contain chicken by-products. Iam's Chunks has corn meal as 2nd ingredient, chicken as first - "chicken" is about 80% water, uncooked and once cooked, corn becomes primary ingredient.

So, basically you're feeding your dog corn (source of Diamond's problems ...) and some chicken by-products. In fact, Eukanuba and Iam's both have MORE corn than Diamond brand (listed as 5th ingredient) You really have to learn the definitions for ingredients, and know the labeling standards, it gets complicated. "Chicken meal" or "lamb meal" is WAY more meat then "Chicken" or "Lamb" - it is Chicken meat that is cooked, then dried and crumbled, THEN weighed - so it's minus the weight of the water. "Chicken meal" is misunderstood, people think "ewww, ground up feathers" but not the case. =)

Some brands I use are: Canidae, Prairie, Dick Van Patten's, Chicken Soup/Dog Lover's
