Opinions please....

I have a friend who is involved with Pre Paid Legal. She is offering me a chance to join in? Is this like Amway? Or those other schemes? Is anyone here familiar with the real internals of the organization?

My company offers something similar, but it is called something different. You might want to read more up on it and see what you think. This is an interesting site to read. http://www.mediamoogle.com/ I personally am not interested in this type of service, but if I thought I would need frequent legal advice, I may reconsider.

These people are not attorneys and they can't give legal advice. They can't even tell you what documents/forms you need -- very similar to not being able to tell someone whether they need a jurat or acknowledgment when it comes to notarizing.

Many attorneys have a plan that if you pay them a flat fee per year, that you will get so many hours of legal advice. It is usually at a huge discount over regular walk in rates. You might want to check into that locally.

I have done some of my own simple legal things using such things as Nolo press

http://www.nolo.com/

or Legal Zoom http://www.nolo.com/

but before I go do something on my own, I do go to my attorney for advice. I have known him for years, so I do get a lot of free advice. But he will handle anything big or refer it out if it is not his area of practice.

If you look around, you can find prepaid legal, prepaid identy theft insurance, prepaid pet medical insurance, prepaid auto repair insurance (extended warranties) heck, just about prepaid anything (just Google it, you will be amazed). These ideas began to abound in the 90's by insurance companies as the cost of medical started to eat away at their profits. Also auto and home insurance is highly regulated by many states while prepaid plans such as listed above are not and therefore highly profitable.

In my humble opinion, save your money and begin a good relationship with a good local attorney. However, you should run the numbers against how much you would actually use someones legal services and decide that way. But check out the two websites above.

Thanks for the answer Glenn, but I was asked to get into this as a business venture, not because I need legal help. So my question is really What is your opinion on this as a self employment venture?

I really missed that one. I guess I just read what I wanted to read because someone is always trying to sell me something ...

I don't know a whole lot about selling it. I would say to look at the numbers and if you like what you see, then give it a try. A good sales person can sell a drowning man a bottle of water. Just because I wouldn't buy it doesn't mean that there isn't a lot of people who would. If you like what are doing, then that is more than half the battle.

Good Luck.
