Please pass the docs..
I've read several posts regarding something coming up and the original SA cannot do the signing and finds another SA to handle. I have recently met several SA's in my area and would feel comfortable handing over a signing in the case of an emergency. Is this an acceptable practice with SS/TC's? How is payment handled? TIA

While I feel this should be a great way for notaries to network and keep the work flowing, I also can see how this makes it harder for those not in your clique to get any work. This would be really hard for those that don't have a network of title companies to work for. It would also seem that it would be harder on those that haven't been in the business that long.

I think this is a wonderful idea. I have a friend who is a notary that I have met from the buz. She is in the Southern part of Virginia and I'm in the Northern part. She sends work my way when she gets a call asking if she knows of anyone in my area and vise versa. I think we notaries need to stick together in this business.

kkdmiddleton..What counties or areas do you cover?
I've received several request from title companies for notaries in areas that I don't service. I just had a request last week from an attorney that I do closings for needing me to cover closings in Arlington and Chesapeake. Of course both area were 2 hour drives for me and I could not do it.
Email me with the counties you cover and I will be sure to forward TC and others to you if it is not an area I cover. [e-mail address]

Please add me to your referral list for the Northern Neck area. (Lancaster, Richmond and Northumberland Counties. I also handle Middelsex, Mathews and Gloucester. I'll remember you for "up north" if you'll give me your areas.
Thanks

To RE--
I think that is the exact purpose of using a network... keeping the work within the network. If that makes it harder for the newbies, so be it. It's called competition.

and...
I'm only going to refer people that I know can do an excellent job.
I *always* refer someone if I can't do it. And in turn, I've got referrals from people on this board-This is what building business relationships is all about.

I do it!
I have 2 notaries I network with and have referred back and forth with. The SS and TC's are very appreciative about this and we cover for each other when we go away or are out of town.

What an inane answer.
You really think that because a few notaries network with each other and toss the occasional job each others way that it somehow affects the workflow for all of the other notaries in their area? In California no less?
And even if that were somehow the case, why on earth should Blueink care about any of it? What, now we're supposed to be concerned about hogging all the business to ourselves and try to spread it around more or something? Give me a freaking break. This ain't a hippie commune, it's business.

Hey, leave the hippies out of it! They were nice people. I knew some of them. They had long hair and shared everything. They grew mushrooms and baked brownies. I feel bad for them now. There's nothing more disturbing than a half-deaf, grey haired hippie. Sometimes they are so lonely they stroll the streets even looking for a Moonie...anyone who can help them find a good place to live in peace. Sniff...
Hand me a whatever it is you're having and someone...please ask them to play Me and Bobbie McGee. I feel like singing along.

Of course, the Manson family were also a bunch of hippies.

Ease up...you sure hold a grudge a long time. Charlie had a rough childhood.
Squeaky is still a little angry, but that other gal seems to be mellowing. It's ony been about 38 years.

Depends on how you look at it......
What you appear to be talking about is handing over a signing to another agent without SS or TC approval. From my perspective this is not OK. I personally have had this happen many times and it really makes my company look bad. I contacted you because I wanted to work with you not someone else. For example, we send headsheets to clients with the assigned closers information. When my client gets the docs back and sees that Joe Blow did the closing versus Blueink(who was assigned by my company to do the closing), that seems really fishy to them....Now on the threads below, they are talking about "referring" the SS to another qualified closer in the area and I think that is perfectly good practice. It is truly appreciated when one of the closers that we work with refers us to another qualified closer - especially when the referrals are coming from trusted closers that we have worked with for a long time.

Hell must have frozen over....
because I actually agree with Sherry. If you have an emergency, more than likely the company that hired you will be appreciative that you were able to get the signing covered, but I think you should definitely get their approval first.
I just had a situation a few weeks ago where I discovered the borrower needed a spanish speaking notary after I already had the docs. I told the company that I knew someone who could probably do it and would be willing to pick up the docs from me, but they didn't want to do that. They said they only want to use signing agents that they've already screened. So they found somebody else and ended up emailing a new set of documents to them instead.

Sherry, my original post was geared toward
proper procedure when in an emergency situation. A couple of months ago, I had to fly back East unexpectedly and had several signings scheduled and confirmed. Of course it was a Saturday and I couldn't reach the hiring entities. I already had the docs. What would have been the proper way to handle this situation? Thank's!

Re: Sherry, my original post was geared toward
Most SS should give emergency numbers so that you can get in touch with someone when a situation arises after hours.

Re: Sherry, my original post was geared toward
While that is a good idea, I don't think it happens very often, at least not with the SS I work with. Occasionally I'll get an after hour number, but most of the time I only have the office number.
Blueink, in a situation like yours I would have had somebody else do the signings if I had that option. If you can't get a hold of anybody and an emergency arises, I'd say it's best to err on the side of having the signing completed so the borrower isn't inconvenienced.

Thank's Cali for your reply..
In a perfect world, yes there would be an emergency number available (one that someone actually answers!). I agree, having another (personally known) signing agent as backup is a comforting and responsible option. Certainly a chaos minimzer.
