Interesting differences

In Russian Babushka is the endearing version of Grandmother, sharf is the word for head scarf and Babka is a rude way of saying old woman. That is what I meant when I said I could underatand Polish but not speak it.

Re: mmmmm

Good grief, Its cold and rainy here and golubtzi would go real well right now. Actually today is a very busy day and I guess Ill just get some Bertolli's Shrimp Scampi out of the freezer, 10minutes in the skillet and its grea!. The only drawback is that they are for two and are really tough to split but if you haven't tried them I recommend them heartily. The chicken parmesan is unfortunate because the breading gets soggy and I hate soggy breading on my chicken parmesan. Lunch time!

By the way Charm, did your Grandmother make

pielmeni. They are kind of lake a large ravioli stuffed with meat. If I could only find some of those I can't even get them in the Russian district in San Francisco.

Re: By the way Charm, did your Grandmother make

Try this one...yummmms

Pelmeni recipe -

· Ingredients
1 1/2 cups flour
2 eggs
1/2 cup water
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 lb. ground beef
1/2 lb. ground pork
2 medium onions, finely chopped
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper
garlic to taste

To make the dough, combine the flour, eggs, water and 1/2 tsp. salt. Knead mixture. Let rest for 30 minutes. Mix the ground beef, ground pork, onions, 1 tsp. salt, pepper and garlic together. Cut the dough into three equally sized pieces and roll each one into a cylinder the diameter of a finger. Cut each cylinder into pieces the size of a walnut, then roll each piece into a very thin flat cake with a diameter of about 2 inches. Put some of the ground meat mixture in the center of each flat cake (quite a lot, but not so much that you can't then seal up the dough). Then fold the dough in half and join up the edges to seal them. Pinch the corners together: you should now have a ravioli-shaped "flying saucer."

Boil the pelmeni in salted water for seven minutes, or until they float to the surface. Serve them in soup plates with sour cream or in broth.

An interesting link you might enjoy!

Most people don't think of the University of California at Berkeley as a place for unique recipes but the university started a project a nuimber of years ago called the Searchable Online Archive of Recipes (SOAR) you can find it at:

http://www.recipesource.com/

My apologies I can't seem to get links to work on this forum to save my life. Anyway enjoy it there are some really great recipes on the site.

Re: Thanks for the e-m..."Babushka"

Without knowing yours and Charles' conversation, I have to comment on 'babushka'.

I never ever knew where I came up with the word, but that's what I used to call my kiddo's when they were infants..."babushka". I thought at the time, it meant "my love", and also thought (without knowing) it was German. I see it's Russian instead.

As I watch the Oz Open (as I've done all week) ...I can't imagine anybody calling Ms. Sharapova "babushka"....except her wierdo Dad. But I guess "Babushka" is in the eye of the beholder.

I'll still call my grandkids (if I ever get them) Babushka. It's such a sweet term of endearment.

Re: Thanks for the e-m..."Babushka"

That's real cute. It is a sweet term of endearment though not one that Ms. Sharopova might appreciate. I didn't realize her Dad called that: perhaps its a personal joke. I re call being in a grocery store with my daughter one time and we always had a very close relationship. We have a lot of private joke between us. She was about 10 at the time and she said something to me that might have been construed by an outsider as being a little over the top and I rejoined that I "was going to beat her to a bloody pulp" one of the shoppers near us dropped whatever she was holding and I got some really strange shocked looks for some of the other shoppers. We still laugh about it to day. I don't even remember where that bloody pulp comment came from originally but it always elicits a smile from her!

By the way we were comparing various terms for Grandmother in Slavic languages.

Re: Thanks for the e-m..."Babushka" LOL Charles

I have an aunt, only 9 years older than I. She is sort of ... "earthy" for lack of a better term. When her daughter misbehaved, she would say..."stop, or I'll rip off your arm and beat you with it until you're a bloody pulp".

My neice, in retaliation, would respond, "no, Mother....no, not the coat hanger, please...no Mother...." (This was after the Joan Crawford movie). Believe me, it got LOTS of looks from shoppers as my neice appreciated an audience...I'm surprised it didn't result in a call to the local PD.

Sigh, we can't pick our relatives, but we sure can either enjoy them or make excuses. I prefer to enjoy them!
