GDI printers rely on Windows to render the page for printing. GDI is a part of Windows. That's why there is no PCL, since PCL is embedded in printer drivers and then only for laser printers that have their own print engine. GDI or 'host based' LASER printers will print ok for most printing, but you won't be able to print some documents that require PCL. Also, you must make sure the printer is a LASER printer and not an inkjet or bubblejet printer.
If you're looking for a printer, I suggest seeing if you can find an HP Laserjet 1300 on ebay. The Laserjet 1320 is the replacement printer. If you want a second tray, you will need to get the Laserjet 1320tn.

I have had a 1320tn for about 2 months it works great, it took a while to configure for use with pdf files, I finally downloaded the pcl5 driver for that and now it works great, also PAW helped with it too, thanks PAW

The 1320t prints at about 22ppm. Mine works great. It was quick and easy to set up. But I've also worked with computers and printers just about all my life. I would take advantage of the $100 rebate, too. Also, when selecting printers, look up the prices of the replacement toners. Some are very pricey. I bought my printer refurbished and saved a bundle. Works wonderfully! - Melissa

Re: 2-sided printing
Before you begin printing loan docs double-sided, you best check with SS, TC, etc. to see if it is allowed. Many won't accept double-sided printing.

Re: 2-sided printing
I've had a 1320TN for a year now and it works very well. Two sided printing is done automatically by at least one of the doc programs that use PCL but I would not take it on myself to print two sided without instructions.
I have refiled my own cartridges several times with no problems and have save a lot. I got mine from: http://www.tonerkits.com
