Affidavit of citizenship?

Someone wants to travel to Mexico from CA. Am I correct in the understanding that passports aren't required until the end of '06? Also, she had an Affidavit of Citizenship notarized in 1990 which she used before to travel. Do those things have an expiration? Does she need this?

1990 wow! Don't they have their birth certificate?

I don't have a clue what is required.

I just know as a California Notary, you have definite guidelines as to what you are authorized to do, and that would not include figuring out expiration dates on passports or anything else that isn't in the arena of California notary law.

You are not an attorney and IMO are very, very close to UPL, and all those tricky questions on the exam about immigration. Be very careful.

Yep

Why is this being asked on a notary board? It has nothing to do with our jobs and any competent notary would know that this isn't something we would know just by virtue of being notaries.

Re: Yep

Actually this is the Premier Website for Professional Notaries. Where else would someone go with a question like that. I'm a professional Notary and I have notarized my share of Affidavits of Citizenship. So lets take a look at the question.

Someone wants to travel to Mexico from CA. (I'm jealous bring me back some tequila)

Am I correct in the understanding that passports aren't required until the end of '06? (That's what the new law says but that's going to hurt tourism so it's doubtful it will be fully enforced)

Also, she had an Affidavit of Citizenship notarized in 1990 which she used before to travel. (Airlines and travel agencies to name a few just hand these out to be subscribed and sworn by any notary).

Do those things have an expiration? (Do Deeds expire?)

Does she need this? (Not is she has a Birth certificate and a Drivers License.)

What are you attempting to say? The state is very clear about UPL, are you suggesting they aren't clear about the matter?

You think this is the logical place to come with questions about IMMIGRATION?

You're a CA notary Joe, can you refer me to the page in the manual that gives us a rundown of the laws on what's needed to travel between foreign countries?

"I'm a professional Notary and I have notarized my share of Affidavits of Citizenship."

I've notarized living trusts, does that now make me qualified to give advice on their contents? Somebody else on the board is notarizing a mylar map. Does that make her qualified to give advice on building housing developments? The answers you gave in your post, whether right or wrong, are not things you know from becoming a notary, you learned them somewhere else.

Seriously, I thought you knew your stuff better than this Joe.

People used to use those to travel to Mexico before 911.

I used to notarize lots of them.

Now borders are tighter.
