Basic Notary Fees
I have another question. How much of your time do you spend performing routine/basic notarizing of documents? 10%/25%? Alabama's fees are less than $2.00 for each document. I can't imagine "breaking even" financially by travelling to a location to do routine notarizations. I'm not talking about loan docs. That makes sense to me. What am I missing?

Personally I don't do basic documents. In WA the fee is 5.00 if they come to you. If you have to go to them, then you can charge mileage. I suggest read the fine print of your state laws and read for what they say word for word. You should be able to charge more than that if you are driving to them.

Thank you to both of you who responded. I have scoured Alabama's Codes and Laws and they don't seem to address the travel aspect. I emailed the Secretary of State and she has the Attorney General researching for me. What gets me is that when I need something notarized for myself....I am quoted anywhere from $5 - $20 per document! I guess they feel they can get away with it. Bev, I will call you in the morning.

Michelle....
Remember, when you travel to perform notarizations you can charge for the following: (1) travel; (2) your time; (3) the notarial act (fees mandated by most statutes).

Re: Korey
I am thumping myself on my forehead. Of course! For some reason I was missing out on items (1) and (2). I guess I need to make sure that my receipt/invoice clearly itemizes each charge. Thank you.
