Dental Plans for Independent Contractors?

Since we are all independent contractors, what do you all do for dental insurance? I've been comparing rates on www.dentalplans.com but wondered if there was something better out there.

Thanks!

Hi Betsy. I offer dental discounts. For one person, it is $11.95/month for a family, $19.95/month. (doesn't matter how many people). The rates are incredible. I use it myself. You can save up to 80%. What state are you in?

You have got to be joking

You give a price list of various services, pitch some other products that you offer, list 2 different phone numbers to contact you and you say you're not advertising? Give me a freaking break.

Re: You have got to be joking

Dental plans are a joke. In a past life I worked for three Dentists and none of them would take the $10 per month so-called-insurance plans. A PMF crown will cost you about $1200...with a "plan" it will cost $800, but you need to find a provider in the network. In my experience, the only Dentists that take part in the $10 per month plans are the Dentists that I wouldn't send my dog to.

Dental insurance has never been a great savings. IMO

Hi Betsy
I have marketed Dental Plans and Dental Insurance for many years. Plans are usually discounts from dentists who are trying to build their business whereas Insurance pays cash to the dentist for services. Insurance come in two basic forms flat fees for each type of service and a percentage (80/20) of the total of all services. Insurance also has waiting periods and maximum limits. Say a 1 year wait for a root canal and a maximum pay out of $300. Most people purchase dental insurance when their is a perceived need so I is a loss leader for any insurance company. For that reason "Plans" are popular because they are not insurance and only arrange discounts for a fee. Kind of like a signing service for the Notaries.

If you know you need major work I strongly suggest looking at having that work done in Mexico. I have had good experiences and you will save $4000 for every $5000 you would pay in the US.

Re: Thanks Joe

Thanks Joe for explaining the difference between dental plans and dental insurance. I have no major need, just normal exams and cleaning. I have never had problems with my teeth my entire life and have only two filliings in my entire mouth.

My last dentist was charging $140 for a cleaning and I freaked since I'm now paying out cash, whereas I had dental insurance included all through my airline career.

I have a family plan through PMI. I pay $25 for a cleaning and was able to save over $2,000 on my daughters braces. There was not a waiting period. You could also do Delta Dental, but they do have a waiting period.

Hi Betsy,

PMI is an affiliate of Delta Dental Plan. I"m not sure if they insure out of California. They are located in Cerritos, Ca. The phone # is 800-422-4234. Good Luck!

Hi Betsy. Sorry for a late response. I didn't expect to get lot's of responses. That's nice. Here's the info. Initial oral exam fee for dentist is $100.00, you pay $32.
Periodic Oral exam, their fee $60, you pay $12. Xrays, their fee 122, you pay $50. Teeth cleaning (their are 2 types) Light scaling $95, you pay $42 and Deep cleaning $215, you pay $75. Their are more prices but for me to put them all on here, it might be insane. We also offer for the same price as the dental, you get FREE vision, prescription and chiropractic plans all for the $11.95 for single and $19.95 for family. I used it personally so I know what I'm talking about. My husband got Lasik last Friday and saved $250. He paid $1200. That was not bad at all. For prescription, my husband broke his foot and we paid for percaset $3.00. We also saved 60% on frames and lenses. This was before the lasik surgery..lol.. We are nation wide. So it doesn't matter where you are. If you have any questions and want to go over it more, you may call me. (201)556-0453

Betsy, a suggestion....

Have you ever thought of going to the U of M School of Dentistry, or University of
Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry to get work done (it's a lot cheaper).
