Fun with SOX

After I saw the message on the board today about the new website for SOX and the email address for the owner I couldn't help myself. I emailed her the following:

Subject: More testimonials for your website

"Working for SOX for the past few years has been wonderful. From day one
they have been a company that I can trust to help grow my notary business
They have longevity in the business because they care about their clients
and notaries. SOX has all the qualities that every signing service should
have today. Impeccable customer service, utmost professionalism and
reliability. They are a company to trust."

- Dianne Dahlke (notary)

*******note from me, the above is the testimonial that they have on their website*********

I've read about them and just wonder how they can still be in business after burning so many notaries. They call me about once a month and each time I decline, telling them why and they would still call next time.

I've spoken to a few notaries who say that they also decline SOX's assignments but don't actually say why. I think everyone should tell those dead beat companies the truth. I do. I tell them that they have a bad rating when it comes to payment and unless they would be willing to include a cashiers check with the docs, I would have to pass. Never got an assignment that way but it's no loss in my book.

If you have been trying to get paid for your services and you have emailed, faxed, mailed, and called and no luck. You can go to www.labbb.org (Better Buisness Bureau) and file a claim and in about two weeks you will be getting your check. This IS the only way that I got paid after about 7 months of not getting anything done by the company directly.

and that was only after I reported to the BBB, sent them numerous collection letters and talked to their accounting dept. about 5 times.

You can do a search and see that yes, many notaries have been stiffed.

I honestly can't believe that anyone would work for a company that takes over 90 days to pay. In a thread below, I saw someone that still works for them even though they sometimes don't get paid for over 3 months. This is astonishing! By taking these signings, you're telling them that it's ok to do that. You're actually funding their receivables and I suspect they are laughing all the way to the bank.

Try waiting over 90 days to pay a bill-They will either shut you down, or turn you over to collections. That is exaclty what we should do to SOX.

I've been stiffed by SOX for about $500+ in unpaid invoices, MY FedEx account got charged for THEIR transaction, they are not responding and am about to go after them in court. I'm searching for two things:

1. Other notaries in California who have been stiffed by SOX and the remedy, if any.
2. The rules on collecting trebel damages.
You can contact me directly at [e-mail address]
If you advise me that you wish to remain annonymous I will respect your wishes. Names are better. I mostly just need annecdotes that could be substantiated.

Here's another one for you Cali .......

BUT first, I'd like to ask ALL of you reading the comments on this (and other forums) who DECLINE SOX jobs on the pretext that they are one of the non-paying SS office, ESPECIALLY if you're in San Diego, please CONTINUE to decline their job offers!!

It will only mean more calls to my office ......

Now, my comment to add to those above :

For the 6th straight month, a check from SOX arrived today for the entire month's total from last month, two jobs, one no sign, one normal refinance, $112, submitted to them by UPS mail on their invoice on the 1st of the month, arriving in their office by the 5th, WHICH IS THE INSTRUCTIONS MADE BY THEM TO GET PAID.

True, this is several jobs less than previous months, but as everything else has declined a bit as well with 25 other clients no big surprise.

I have NO IDEA what you folks who report trouble with them are doing, BUT PLEASE CONTINUE!!!!!!

Frankly, they can call me any time, as they meet my minimum fees, without an argument, pay mileage for things outside my "free" unsurcharged 30 mile round trip measured distance, and pay as required when I FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS.

I suspect things will even get easier submitting invoiced jobs to the website.

Like I said above, I don't have any idea what you OTHER notary folks are doing wrong, but I hope you KEEP DECLINING their assignments in San Diego!!!!!

LMAO!!!

But hey, since you've had good luck with them, and i'm a pretty smart guy, I'll just ignore all of the warnings I've seen over the past 3 years and rush to sign up with them.

Then they fell behind and finally I had to begin collection before they reconciled their account. I don't need their business. Re: Alan,

>Lets see, one guy gets it right, and the hundreds of other notaries are screw ups ...........
>Whats wrong with this picture.

THAT'S what I trying to figure out, I thought all you opinionated notary folks were SMART!

Look, you all feel free to post what you suppose is a factual story about how you didn't get paid, I'm just posting that I have not had that problem after the first invoice I sent them, and was then given the instructions to follow to get paid when I called to inquire about it.

Frankly, after telling how I get paid to try to help some folks out who obviously don't get it and then being treated like I just telling a big story by the pseudo intellectuals here I couldn't care LESS any more about helping anyone else here be successful at it. Y'all have finally worn out all my willingness to help!

>I agree with Cali. You seem to be very invested in spending time telling everyone how
>to invoice a company who does not pay, and then telling people how stupid they are
>for not being the Anal Retentive Invoicer that SOX will pay.

You seem to absorbed what I've posted here perfectly. Congratulations!

I, for one, have had no trouble with SOX since I started following the exact instructions given to me after my first invoice went not responded to and I called to inquire about it. I have been paid for everything I have done with them, including two no signs.

WHAT is everyone else's problem with this issue? I have NO idea!

As far as being "very invested in spending time telling everyone how to invoice a company who does not pay" I'm certainly NOT any more and that has NOT been my experience with them, but you seem to think my opinion is a lot less valid or valuable than yours.

No problem, you just keep on thinking whatever it is you're convinced is the reality of the issue.

Should you ignore my story of success with this SS and simply go on believing what folks who can't follow instructions post here? HEY ....... giddy up!!!! Smile

It's also time for you folks for face some facts.

They HAVE been around a long time.

They DO have lot's of clients.

They DO precess many closings.

And there is more than just ME posting they have had no problem with getting them to pay the invoices sent from our offices.

Could it be that there IS SOMETHING you all are not doing according to their instruction? Could it be that most of you are being duped into believing whatever someone else posts who couldn't follow instructions and now you don't even want to do a small bit of self discovery to find out what YOU'RE doing wrong, insisting on making the client, SOX, follow your office's billing procedure instead?

I have posted that I have no problem getting paid by SOX several times, because I don't. They pay my normal fees, agree to my travel surcharge for distances over 30 miles round trip, and pay the invoice I send by postal mail that arrives BEFORE the 5th of the month by the 20th of that month.

I have NO idea what everyone else is doing, and frankly don't much care any more.

As I said above, I hope that you all just keep believing what you've been told by those who can't follow instructions and keep telling them no when they call you. More work for me, and it's probably time for me to stop trying to be a good guy trying to help opinionated people who are obviously already missing the point on this SS.

And you can stop trying to tell me because I get paid by them I must be doing something wrong ...... that makes as much sense as reading that SOX doesn't pay here in this internet forum and then telling them you don't want the assignment when they call you!

If you're offended by my being sarcastic and course in my post here, I apologize.

I was only responding in kind to the way I've been treated by folks here, and you vcan read who I was responding directly to in my post.

From here on out, on this issue, y'all or ON YOUR OWN! I GIVE UP trying to be nice!

You can't say I didn't try to help .........

Excuse us for being cynical

But many of us how endured many YEARS of reading sad posts as the one included bleow, and have come to realize that a leopard doesn not change it's spots.Their are on a multi year cycle of the same game. They are ALWAYS changing their policies to make payment easier, they are ALWAYS replacing their payment policies, ALWAYS replacing employees who were stealing money,ALWAY replacing employees not implementing their payment policies ALWAYS replacing Managers who were not overseeing their payment policies. A lot of us on this board have seen these same scenarios repeat themselves over and over. I find no glee in being right at the expense of you getting ripped off by this company. It is not a question of "if", but "when."

Two weeks ago I was contacted three times in one day by SOX. Three different times, three different numbers, three different area codes. Three times I declined, gave them specific reasons why I would work for them, and asked that they take my name out of their database and put me on their DO NOT CALL LIST!!!!! While I was on the road, I recieved another phone call from a young gal who claimed she was from Notary2YOu. Asked if I could do a e-doc signing for them that evening. I negotiated a fee, my wife, god bless her, printed the docs for me and the PO. To my horror when I got home here was a PO from SOX. I contacted the person who was supposedly the manager and reported that I was not in the habit of taking signing from vendors who used fraud to fill their orders. She referred me to the NEW manager as she was no longer with the company. I called the borrower and explained the dilema and he in turn called his LO. The LO officer called me and asked if I would complete the signing and work directly for the lender. I agreed. Completed the signing. This particular lender has in house title and I spoke to the escrow officer and she confirmed that they have great difficulty in filling the orders because of their past performance and that sometimes the schedulers often fudge to get SA's to take the orders. Not the type of company I care to do business with. But to each his own....

"As I sit printing Docs I have my hat in my hand and I am ever so humble. I had gotten paid from SOX up until this last month and I was one of the ones that said I would do the work until I got burned. One time shame on them, two times shame on me. A 125.00 lesson learned the hard way, but learned. Guess I shouldn't be so stubborn. Thanks to those who tried......Steve

Re: Alan,

**but you seem to think my opinion is a lot less valid or valuable than yours.**

No. I don't think that way at all.

And, sarcasm is not offensive to me, else I would not use it myself. If it weren't for the high volume of notaries (your own chosen colleagues) getting stiffed by unreasonable invoicing rules set by a firm who is using this as a scam to boost their own cash flow I might think your post was funny as heck. It's sad when people need their checks to buy school supplies and pay doctor bills and get used like toilet paper. It's sick and abusive for SOX to do this.

**I have NO idea what everyone else is doing, and frankly don't much care any more.
As I said above, I hope that you all just keep believing what you've been told by those who can't follow instructions...**

You know, Alan, you could be right about the lack of following instructions which amount to a hill of beans in the real world.

But again, SOX is ego-tripping if they believe that's reason enough to not pay vendors. Let's see them pull that with the light company or the city's utility dept.

It does not work like that in corporate America. A late invoice might delay a payment, but it does not legally prohibit a payment.

Is it a game if the invoice is not there by the 5th it goes into the trash? Well, sorry, that's not the way it's done in a sane business transaction. The one sending the bill dictates the terms, not the other way around, unless you are in Sox World, apparently.

Been reading your posts for a long time, SSENotary. Since you got your feet wet you have become quite the one to mock others. (LMAO at others regularly.)

Well, good. And, no I have never been unpaid by a client, but I do not think it is funny when other people are stiffed constantly by the same company. This many notaries cannot be wrong.

When I first found this forum one of the posts explained how one must make their OWN no no list, that what didn't work for another doesn't necessairly mean it won't work for you. Having said that I have never been stiffed for payment although sometimes it's slow getting to me. HOWEVER, SOX is one of the one's that I definitely avoid because they've treated so many the same way. It's on every board you go to, once I see a name appear over and over again on every board every day, I'd be a bit nuts to take the plunge. Yes San Diego, you can have my share too. Bon Apetite!

San Diego,
SOX has a bad reputation on not just this board, but the no no lists, Notary Beware, and several others. If you want all of their business then go for it, I am sure nobody will object. I am not one bit surprised that they pay you, as you seem to be their biggest spokesman (if they didn't pay for your ridiculous advertising they would have zero support). However, the fact remains that if 1% (i.e. "you"Wink of their notaries get paid, and the other 99% (i.e. "all others"Wink don't get paid, then there is a problem. You are suggesting that the fault lies in the notaries that do not know how to properly invoice. The true fact is that SOX is about as unethical as a company can get. I really hope that you know how to swim, because when their ship sinks you will need those skills to make it to the surface (unless you plan to stay at the bottom with them).

SOX and other dead beat companies -- Demand ltr that works.

I recently had a company that kept saying that payment was going in the mail that day...etc.
Finally I composed a demand ltr, then let my boss (an atty) critique it. In the letter I gave the company
14 days to send the check before action would be taken (not the words used). I had a check in 12 days.

It cost me $8.00 for Fed-Ex.

Will share a sample letter.

Good luck to everyone.
