Name Change

A thought has crept into my head (oh - oh!) about name changes. We're all familiar with people who want to change their name, they go to court, publish the new name in the paper, etc then they become known by the new name.
How is it handled for newlyweds nowadays? I know that the bride should fill out the necessary forms at the Social Security office. Is it simply enough that they merely adopt their new name or is their a formality involved? Do they take thier marriage license to DMV and change their records? Just an idle thought of mine. Any opinions?

www.Nolo.com has good do-it-yourself book on this.

Changing name via usage (instead via court procedure or production of marriage license) is not as accepted as it was before 911.

I did a usage change 15 yrs ago. Needed a special license. Required a background check. Usage change gave me trouble.

Re: Name Change-Good question, not long ago my daughter

married on Mother's Day and she has not yet changed anything, and they are in the middle of doing several things that the current name needs to be used. She asked me if she should change to name to Eddie's name I said well I know a lot of ladies use their maiden name as well as the husband's name, your aunt does this. It is my belief the wife should take the husband's name once married and more so today due to school issues with kids having different names then mom and dad. I prefer all the same name, children, husband, wife, call me old fashioned. She was questioning me also because I keep her on my school district benefits and can until she is 25, but Eddie has benefits and I suggest you change everything to Gonzalez. She needs to go to the DMV and place the car she owns in her name, it is currrently in our name, so she can go on Eddie's insurance, she does have her marriage certificate and I will remind her to take that. It can be confusing.....

Because of 911 CA state law

Your DL has to match your SS. Recently I had a borrower who had to change her DL back to her maiden name because she had never switched her SS to her married name. As people are renewing their license, Calif is catching this and making peoples DL match their SSA. Thanks Jon, for that info. message 128378

Christi Re: Because of 911 CA state law

Christi,

Having reviewed the DMV website, this requirement is for those persons either requesting an original license, or for those needing to correct their social security number (on file with DMV). It does not apply to those who renew. Additionally, it also does not apply to legal documented aliens, who have no social security number.

Further explaniation is given, that, if the two names do not match, then the social security card needs to be corrected. Meaning that, this borrower should have corrected her social security card to show her new married name. Also, how could DMV change her new married name to her previous maiden name, without proof of divorce etc. . .?

Pam

Re: Christi Re: Because of 911 CA state law

Maybe Mrs borrower misunderstood what they told her to do. But I did see her DL with the maiden name and also her passport with married name. They have been married over 20 years and she said her DL used to have her married name. She is a canadian citizen, could that be it???
