OT- Movie Review for An Inconvenient truth
Moanin, all. I went and saw An Inconvenient Truth on the 4th and I gotta say it was pretty good. I plan to read the book as well. It'll be a heavy Oscar contender in the documentary category for sure. Al Gore was great in it. He was very confident in his presentation of the information and facts. He used his personal life experiences as segways to different parts of the presentation. You truly can tell he cares about this issue and its what consumes and drives him and everything he has done in his political career. The science is very solid and easily verifiable. Middle and High School science classes used to teach about the geothermal greenhouse effect on Venus which has a similar atmosphere much like ours so its not hard to extrapolate that to our world. I encourage everyone to go check out this movie and learn a lot about the climate crisis. One really good point that was made in this movie was that in the 80's there was a crisis with the Ozone Layer and laws were passed banning the use of the chemicals creating the chlorofluorocarbons or CFC's for short. This is a result of the 1987 Montreal Protocols where representative from 43 agreed to freeze CFC levels at 1986 levels and decreasing them and eventually phasing them out. A similar agreement was ratified in 1997 in Kyoto to help decrease the production of Carbon Dioxide with 163 nations signing on to it with only Australia and the United States as the only holding outs from ratification. Is it possible to stop the climate crisis? Yes. However, we need elected officials that will listen not to corporate lobbyists, but to the scientists with ice core samples in hand watching the glaciers melting before their eyes.
***If someone wants to tell me I'm rambling a little on this, I will agree with you but its good information to have. Impress your friends!!!***

This is indeed serious. All we need to do is to look at the devastating weather we have experienced, that should be a big clue. There are so many things that we need to do. As consumers we need to demand products that do not denigrate the environment. We need to keep on government officials to enact and enforce protective legislation. We need to be proactive.

I agree, but
It just can't be a US effort! China is now over taking us in the use of fossil fuel (if they haven't surpassed us already)! At least this country is starting to take steps to deal with it! Haven't seen the movie and I don't know if this is true of Al Gore, but I've seen politicians get on tv and tell us we need to conserve and be prudent when they themselves are driving large SUVs that use a ton of gas and flying around in private jets! The leaders of this country need to lead by example not "don't do as I do, do as I say", attitudes! I don't know what we're going to do about all the volcanos that seem to be going crazy. Heard that also contributes to "Global Warming"

Venus and Earth
Just had a thought. Has anyone ever wondered if Venus went through what Earth is going through now in its earlier days? Did it have polar regions at one point? Was there water on the surface? Is there any now? Is Venus what the Earth has to look forward to? Thoughts?

OT - Venus and Earth
This truly is a friendly response, Jahari, because I like you and think well of you, however, this sounds like fear tactics to me. Good thinking info, but not going to change political beliefs and that's what this is really about.
Christian evangelists often beat on the head of the guilt-ridden with scary stories about the end of the world. I get emails which try to line up Bible prophecy with current events. All I can say is "If Jesus is so great, and the sinful world is so rotten, why aren't you ready to get this over with and go see Him. I am. Don't scare *me* with the briar patch, Brer Rabbit."
Switching back to my thoughts on this post...I understand that the world has environmental problems, but the fear tactics do not motivate me to think your way, Jahari.
Thought and passionate belief put into action without agendas...seeds in deeds without a secret message...these are the things which change the way I think...and, I actually do observe people and I actually do think. JMO

Re: OT - Venus and Earth
No really this isnt a fear tactic thing at all Brenda. I just had a thought about the two planets seeing as how their atmosphere's are similar. This isnt about politics. I've read a few of the posts in this thread and its automatically assumed that because Al Gore did a movie about global warming, it's a political thing. If Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tom Cruise or George Clooney did it, they'd be written off as Hollywood kooks as many regular people tend to do feeling they should have no opinion, keep quiet and that they should entertain and live the Hollywood life. I think this is a mistake to say that just because someone is who they are its automatically assumed there is a motive behind it other than the obvious. I've never gotten the sense that this is just a political shot for Al Gore. He's been involved in this issue for years and will continue to do so regardless of the politics behind it. The man loves the planet and the environment. Find me one person that hates nature and the environment. I think he genuinely wants to effect change on this issue and wants humanity as a whole to get behind this because this issue involves us all. Not once in the movie did he take a shot at the Bush Administration which he easliy could have done. He's taken both sides of the isle to task on their inaction and at the ends tells people if you cannot effect change by writing to your congressmen, to run for congress and effect change. Whats wrong with wanting to build a better world and telling someone that they can do it as well? As to the science end of it, someone posted about differing opinions in the sceintific community. This is a great misconception is that peers in the scientific community all stand behind the evidence that global warming exists and that this is happening at an alarming rate. There was a report from the National Institue of Sciences that released a report saying its very real. However the issue gets confused when it comes to the media as those that believe in the science, side with the scientists and those that dont, side with the skeptics and critics. There's a lot of confusion out there.

I've seen the movie twice. Remember when he spoke of the teacher he had who scolded the boy who asked if the continent of South America had ever fit into the continent of Africa?
"The student became a n'er-do-well and addicted to drugs, and the teacher became science advisor for the current administration."
I'm not confused anymore after seeing the movie. And when I'm due for a new car, I'm buying a Toyota like I wanted to do this last time when I bought a Chevy thinking I was "buying American."

I'm just glad the "Ice Age" that was coming in the 70's never came. Back then, the world was getting colder and the we were expecting the polar ice caps to cover Canada and the northern part of America. It's amazing how a few years can result in totally opposite theories. I'm now waiting for the theory that the ice caps will move to the equator and form an "Ice Belt" around the earth and Antarctica will be a tropical paradise. Maybe I should buy some land down south????

Two taboo topics
Politics and religion.
Firstly, there are many scientists that disagree with the idea of global warming (if this is what the movie is about). They don't disagree because they feel like it, they disagree because they have studies that disagree with global warming. Am I going to site any, No. Why? Because it isn't a hot button issue to me. We each choose our areas of concern and I haven't chosen it. But Al Gore has and that is why it's political.
Secondly, the bible speaks of how there will be many storms and earthquakes in the end times. Am I saying this to start a "you friggin bible thumpers shoving it down my throat thread", NO. What I am saying is it is a possibility. Global warming isn't the only scientific area that scientists disagree with scientificly that could also have a biblical support and explaination. Am I going to go in to others, No. This thread is about Al Gore's movie.
There are those who wouldn't listen to Al Gore if he was talking about ice cream flavors, there are those who won't listen to the alternate science, there are those who wouldn't listen to Jesus is He was standing right in front of them. The point is people close their minds to what they don't want to hear. But there is always more than one side to every story, many times there's 3 or 4 sides, regardless of which one is right and which one is wrong.

Yes it would be nice to here from the other side of this issue. Whenever a qualified and well respected scientist states facts opposite to these views he is shut up with sound bites. Yes our planet is a serious issue and if we can all place our agenda's behind us then together we can find a real solution. In the world today it seems we take sides and then stake out our territory. I do not see people working togther regardless of there individual agenda anymore.
Just two cents here.

SaraBeth intones:
>>Firstly, there are many scientists that disagree with the idea of global warming<<
SaraBeth, ignorance is often excusable. There is no excuse for ignorance driven by ideology -- especially when such ignorance will impact billions of people.
"Many scientists" definitely do NOT disagree that global warming is a legitimate concern. There is a general consensus among knowledgable scientists that global warming is here, and it is reshaping the face of our planet. There is a small and rapidly diminishing cadre of people with valid scientific credentials who dispute the impact that human activities have on the process. Next year, that contingent of holdouts will be even smaller, and 10 years from now those same holdouts, standing in salt water up to their knees outside Kansas City, will be desperately trying to make up excuses for their grandchildren to explain why they let their ideology override their science.
I won't even attempt to address the question of someone who would let the Book of Revelations determine their stance on an issue such as global warming.

Every fiber of your being exudes ideology, Hugh! It's the driving force behind so many of your posts on the board & makes it transparently easy to see where you receive your talking points.
I'll still hold on to the Truth as I know it to be & one that will stand the test of time...not the liberal platitudes you espouse in your tomes. Hugh you must have looked over most of my post. The point is being so set on your ideas that you will blast anyone who disagrees no matter what they site as evidence be it scientific or spiritual/biblical. Leave you ideals at the door. I said there are scientists that according to research say that global warming is not the issue that other scientists are making it. I said scientists disagree. Oh and yes I do believe in the book of Revelations but I could use scientific research to back what I say.

I would rather listen to you than listen to Al Gore about anything. But my opinions aside. I do agree that the world can be better off by people taking better care of our planet. But America is only one country in a vast GLOBAL community. WE are not the only ones with responsibility here.
Our politicians need to deal with our problems first, then see about affecting other nations if necessary. Maybe they will teach us something about ways to help us. Who knows! I think that the shift of the Earths axis has something to do with the climate change as well. Was this discussed in the movie?
|
Reply by Jahari Davis on 7/6/06 12:09pm Msg #131127
The tilt of the earth's axis was discussed int he movie. He pointed out that a majority of the earth's landmass is in its Northern Hemisphere. The Kyoto treaty was a step in the right direction and nearly every country has ratified it except the US and Australia. Al Gore pointed out that China has improved fuel efficiency standards on vehicles as have most european car makers, yet the US still lags behind in the teens and twenties MPG fuel standards. I truly think you should take a chance (cuz I couldn't do it justice here) and go check it out. Regardless of how you feel about Al Gore, you'll really walk away feeling like you learned something. When you're done watching the movie, google some of the items mentioned in the movie. Cities in the US are taking the lead and leaving the federal government behind by adopting and initiating the protocols laid out in Kyoto. The Bush Administration's stance on Kyoto is at best lame in that it will harm the economy but with ratifying Kyoto, it will in fact boost the economy because new technologies will emerge that will be used to reduce Carbon Dioxide levels. Alternative fuels will be developed, alternative energies and the delivery systems will have to be created. All job creators. Go see the movie, then if you like, email or call me and we'll talk about it. I plan to go see it again so that I can absorb the info more.

Volcanoes have been around and have erupted for years, long before the industrial revolution. To say "Well volcanoes spew more toxic stuff than cars do so its not a big deal." is ignorant and short sighted. How many volcanoes have erupted in the last 40 years? They arent as big a factor as you might think. Consider what explodes into the air during an eruption: heat, ash, soot, lava, and falling rock. All of which are affected by gravity (except for heat) and winds eventually settling. Carbon Dioxide is lighter than ash, soot, lava, and falling rock, but heavier than most other gases. I would consider a college level physical science class or talking to an instructor of one of those classes with credentials because K-12 school science classes arent as great as they used to be.

I suggest you study up on your volcano facts and stop worrying about the environment so much. If you do your part and I do mine, I would say it is a big step in the right direction.

OT topics shouldn't include religion OR politics
It's a nice thing to be able to post OT topics, but I think anyone that has simple common courtesy and social skills knows that in a group of people, topics to avoid are religion and politics. I've watched many a get-together unravel over a mild discussion that turned into heated arguments when that discussion had either of the two.
Think of yourself as being at a party with a diverse group of people. Would you introduce such a topic unless you enjoyed being confrontive and watching people get angry? I think not.

Say what you want TG, but it wasnt and I didnt. That just happened to be the movie I saw and wanted to get the word out on. If George W. Bush did have a movie to come out, I'd check it out but somehow his personal version of "A Million Little Pieces" doesnt interest me. The destruction of the Curtis Mathis family and the downfall of Harken energy maybe a TV movie of the week but not good cinema. Now, a movie about his dad in WWII, that might make for an interesting flick. Political figures in movies do not automatically equal political movie. If that were true, then In The Line Of Fire would have been a political movie as would have been Finding Humor In The Muslim World as both had former Sen. Fred Thompson in them. I could see Girls Gone Wild featuring the Bush Twins.

If none of you can read a movie review even if the movie featured a political figure (whether you care for him or not) that takes up a cause in his civilian life that concerns all of us and goes far beyond political rhetoric and not make it bitterly partisan and political, then I truly feel sorry for you. I reviewed a movie by Al Gore. Global Warming is his cause. Take it or leave it but the climate crisis is a problem that WILL affect generations to come and world leaders have a part to play in this or any crisis that involves the global envrionment. And when I say world leaders, I mean George W. Bush as well. Be it action or inaction he is in the White House now and he plays a part in the resolution of the climate crisis along with others. If it were Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan or Colin Powell in office holidng back on Kyoto, I'd give them hell on it too because it would be their issue to deal with. Theories like this come and go and will continue based on whatever the political climate happens to be at the time. This whole thread is nothing more than another attempt by you to further your personal political leanings.
