OT What are data calls on a cellphone?

Are these fax calls that come to my cell phone by mistake.

That would be my guess, but I don't know.

On my service, anything that is not a voice call, is considered data. Such as internet usage, text msg, sending/receiving pictures. So unless you're downloading Eminem ringtones, I'd guess you may be inadvertantly accessing the web or someone's texting to/from your phone. I highly doubt it could be fax calls, because they require a data receiving signal. But I could be wrong. PAW?

I too thought it might be text messaging, but on my cell phone bill it actually shows "text msg pay per use" whether an incoming or outgoing text message. I don't see any other category that shows "data" so maybe on Joan's service, "data" is "text". Mine is Cingular. I do show other billing categories like "Internet pay per use" and "multimedia pay per use".
