Response from CA SOS about Sr.,Jr.

To: [e-mail address]
Subject: Notary Question.

When a signer has the suffix Sr. but not in the CA Driver's License, you can not notarize his signature?

Example:

John P Smith Sr. On the Grant Deed
John P Smith on his CA Driver's License.

Thank you very much for your response.

Although not stated in the law, the "rule of thumb" is that the id should show more than the document. The example you have would not be acceptable, however, if the names were reversed, (sr. on the id card, but not on the document) then it would be okay. The reason is that John P. Smith may not be John P. Smith Sr., however, John P. Smith Sr., could go by John P. Smith. Hope this helps.
