Who offered this crap fee. Did you make a counter offer? If so what was it if you don't mind?

I have started to ask the name and address before the negoti

ations. Then I make a note of the fee offered and save it for a rainy day when I'm slow and want to pull up the recorders web page. Nice to find out what the competition is taking 'um for.

Re: Why look, the fee isn't listed.

Well you know what they were offering you right? I think it does give you a ball park figure. I doubt if I say my fee is $100 and they offer me $85 that the are giving the other notary more than that.
My point is this tells you who is taking the lower fees. Sometimes that is good to know. In fact I will recommend this individual to the company so that they will be busy when the higher $$ come around.

I do same, Bev.

I do too. Keep 'em so busy doing $50 & $75edoc deals that they can't take the good ones if they happen to call. I look at it this way; I'm helping the newbies to gain valuable hands on training.

I'm a newly commissioned Florida notary just beginning my NSA course. However, I was a notary in Connecticut for 15+ years and a paralegal with emphasis on real estate for over 20 years.

I can't believe they'd ask you to do a closing at 3AM!! For that matter - any time prior to 8:00 AM, in my opinion, is totally unreasonable - I would have turned this one down too...was this the lender's idea or the borrowers'? And if the lender's, how did the borrowers feel about it?

At our office in Connecticut (granted small - 2 attorneys but I was the only real estate paralegal) we sometimes closed loans a little earlier or sometimes later than standard business hours (8:30 am - 5:30 pm) but that was at the discretion of the attorney (CT being an attorney-closing state). Borrowers should realize when they apply for the loan that they're going to have to make themselves available for an hour or two for signing the docs and, if a refi, briefly on the day of disbursement (as our office usually required a signoff that they did not cancel the loan even if not required by the lender).

Don't NSA's have any control over the time these signings are scheduled? I sure hope so!!

Sorry this got so windy - this is my first post and the whole thread just blew me away!!

Not really! They use mobile signing agents for the convenience of the borrower, not the convenience of the signing agent. So, we can always turn a 3am signing down (but why would someone advertise 24/7 if they weren't prepared to do a signing at an odd hour)
If they couldn't find someone to accommodate them at 3 am, then they would have to talk to the borrowers about a more reasonable time.

Signing times are at the convenience of the borrower.

You are an independent contractor and can choose what hours you work. Those of us who advertise that we are available 24/7 should be prepared to handle a 3 AM signing. I would do it for double my normal fee.

If you advertise 24/7, then doing a closing after a second shift borrower returns home, is not out of line, imo. I've not been asked to do one at 3 AM, but have been asked for 1 AM when the borrower returns from work.

I have no problem with completing an assignment at 3am.... i've done it before and will probably do it again (mind you there is a premium fee for anything before 7 am.)

Both borrowers worked at the casino in Atlantic City and were scheduled for opposite shifts, so they had a two hour window they'd see each other between 3 & 5 AM.

I'm in complete agreement with Paul on this one

I advertise 24/7 because I'm providing a service of convenience. Many many folks work the off shifts and I'm usually busy once the sun sets! Geez, if I wanted to work 9-5 I'd get a job in an office! I've closed at all hours, in strange places...parking lots and truck stops...my creed is to work my schedule around that of the borrowers, not the opposite. If I didn't work 24/7 I would lose alot of clients to the office of the lender or title or....an attorney.

Re: I'm in complete agreement with Paul on this one

WOW...guess I got told a thing or two!!..<G>

I can sort of see your point - but who do you call if you have any questions in the middle of signing? - the closer who's probably in bed sleeping? And I don't mean limit your signing times to 9-5 - I realize that's probably impractical - but for self-preservation there has to be a limit.

Guess you can tell I'm new to this NSA thing - and I'll probably learn a lot different in the weeks and months to come!! I appreciate your input and look forward to your help in the future if you're willing..Smile

Re: I'm in complete agreement with Paul on this one

Sorry, I certainly never intended to be negative towards you in any way. Welcome to the board and I'm sure you'll find alot of the discussions very informative, I know I have. When I have a late night (this is anything after LO's closing) I always get a "contact" number. They are well aware of the scheduled appointment and I've never had a LO deny me their number. When I confirm with the borrower I "lightly" touch base with something like "I'm sure your LO has gone over the particulars with you" and usually get a positive response. Frankly I have more problems with my day time closings as it seems like they're always "out to lunch".

Re: I'm in complete agreement with Paul on this one

Just because we advertise 24/7 doesn't mean that we're obligated to have the same fees for all hours. A 24 hour plumber is going to charge a lot more for a midnight emergency call than a noon emergency call, why shouldn't we do the same?
