embossing required?

I had a clien come to me and said they were letting their child travel with a church group, and the airline requires and notarized authorization letter. They said it has to be embossed not stamped.
This is in CA. Is this legal to even ask for? If the State authorizes my stamp, shouldn't it be OK.

Embossing is not required in CA; I use it though for more protection when I attach a loose page in addition to the stamp. From what I know you can use it if you ink it because this way you can copy it if you make a copy of whatever paper you are notarizing.

I don't know if they can require you to use an embosser or not, but if you do, you still need to stamp it.

CA Notary Handbook: "Because of the legal requirement that the seal be photographically reproducible, the rubber stamp seal has become all but universal; however, notaries may also use an embosser seal in
addition to the rubber stamp."

If you want to make your client happy fast, you may be able to get an embossing seal over-the-counter at Staples. Of course, I did that in Vermont and Vermont does not require that seal vendors get any kind of authorization form from the state.

Another option might be to take it to the county clerk and get a notary authentication. I don't know if the county clerk's seal is embossed or not.

In California you can not get an embosser over the counter at Staples, unless they make them and you have a letter of authorization from the state for a new stamp. I have always gotten one with each commission, but have NEVER had anyone ask that I use it. It has to be made up just like your stamp is and has the same wording. When new or renewing your commission the letter of authorization allows you to purchase as many stamps or/and embossers at that time that you want at that time. This last time I got three stamps, different sizes and the embosser. My favorite size is the IDEAL 100, it fits on most documents.

Speaking of embossers... question....

I don't have one and have not seen one. Does it contain the same information as a stamp (meaning you have to get a letter of authorization from the SOS office)?

They are right. You are undereducated.

Get an embosser.

The embosser is like notarization for the blind.

I have an embosser and lots of gold seals. I use it all the time along with my notary seal mostly for documents going out of the USA.

Re: Good idea.

Documents intended for use in other countries are more likely to be accepted if they have an embossed stamp because it looks more "official." Gold seals don't hurt, either!
