Business vs Home address
After reading in another thread that a client showed up at the notary's house requesting a notarization I am wondering how many of you do list a home address as opposed to a business address.
When I received my first commission I had my home address listed, this time when I renewed it for some reason at the clerks office it had my business address even though I received my commission certificate and bond at my home address.

I'd say for safety reasons, it's a good idea to list business address since 95% of signings are edoc now a day. So as long as you know where the check goes then use an address you're comfortable with.

I know that the SOS wants us to list our place of business, the clerk was giving me an option and asked where I did business from. I told her I don't meet people at my home I am mobile, answer my cell phone where ever I am , print at home but receive correspondence at business address.
I went ahead and changed it to my home address because I thought that is what the SOS wanted , I'll have to double check . I am moving in 6 months but my business address will remain the same and I am wanting to get an idea of what others do so that I may decide which address to use 6 months from now since I'll have to notify the SOS of a change of address either way.

If you've got a business address, ...
... then it only makes sense to use it. A lot of us do not see clients at our homes, but have no office either. Lady Rouge (she of the red hat) insists that I do not have people come to our home, but people still need an address for the (now just occasional) overnight document package.

Since the post office won't deliver mail on our road, I have a PO Box, and list that as my address on everything, including my business cards. It also stops unwanted "drop bys".

Put a sign on your door. It works!
I used to list my home address... but got too many middle of the night knocks on the door. I have switched my listings to say "Address available upon request"
I also have a small sign on my front door that says my business name, address and phone number. Right below all that is says in bold letters
"New Jersey Notary Public Services available by appointment only. To make an appointment please call XXX-XXX-XXXX. You will not be seen if you do not have an appointment."
Ever since I put that on my front door, I don't get the unexpected knocks on the door. It's not hurting my business, because I don't want the whopping $2.50 I make to notarize a paper at 3AM. Plus, it's also a great deterrant (sp) for the door to door sales and religious groups.

Wow, I've never had anyone just "stop by" for notarial services. If they did, they'd find me in my nightgown and with no makeup on!

I don't even have my address listed in the phone book - it is on here though. I don't get many calls for basic notary services anyway. I have PAW's sign on my jeep but have not received any calls from that yet.

I usually list my P.O. Box number. On sites like NotRot, I put my home address because that is where packages are to be delivered.
