Choices
I got a call at 3PM by a Signing Service to do an e-doc signing in La Jolla for tonight at 6:30. The fee was $100. I turned it down because the fee was lower than my minimum. One hour later I got a call to do a 2 signature mobile call in the same location. I quoted $60 and collected a check for my service before I left. Which one was the better appointment?

Hmmmm... hard one..... not..
I appreciate it when you stand firm.. makes it easier for me to stand firm. I turn down lots of low pay.. I know they go somewhere to other notaries.. but I just can't afford not to make my minimum.

Just a thought
The best appointment would have been doing both Assuming that you could work out the times, you could have made one trip, been paid $160 and expended a little extra time and gas , together with some toner and paper. I am not advocating working on the cheap, but you should consider your "incrmemental cost" of acceping a particular assignment, to determine if it is is it still profitable? Everyone needs to decide what works best for them, but , in many instances, I have acceped a "marginal" job and later get an offer for a job (frequently several jobs ) that can geographically and time wise be combined into one trip. I find it more profitable to be out working , even if each job does not constitute a "killing" than making seperate trips and then deadheading home. There are numerous economic socialogical and personal factors involved in the decision, but generally you will make more $ out working tha you will staying home and watching re-runs of Leave it to Beaver." I also believe that the more jobs that you accept, the more you will be offered. The TC/SS schedulers are going to make their first call to someone who will likely accept the job. The new realities of the NSA business may cause some NSAs to consider re-thinking, and possibly updating their business plan Have a great weekend all.

I agree with Bob. They make 'em smart in Chicago. However, Bob, your reply may lend credence to the "windy city" rep, hee hee.

I agree taking both might have worked out well, it has frequently happened to me when I had one appt. in an area, then one or two more will appear. I used to do some e-docs for $100.00 but that was before I was getting lots of sub-prime, they are lots and lots more paperwork. No way will I accept $100.00 for those packages. It

Bob did you read my post? Your answer was completely off the mark. Sometimes that's referred to as a thread - jacking. I asked what one was the better appointment. The 5 minuite $60 cash one or the $100 4 hour adventure one due to close at peak traffic time that was offered to me at 3PM by a signing service. Do you own a signing service?

Nothing personal , Joe. We have both been around......
these boards long enough to reealized that starting a thread is like putting a note in a bottle and throwing it into the ocean. You never know where it may end up. I , of course , am not familiar with San Diego geography and traffic patterns. I was just trying to point out ( among other things) that sometimes you may end up kicking yourself for turning down a job, when you later learn that you could have combined it with several more. Hope that you have a great summer. (BTW, how do you know when it is Summer in SD? I could get used to the same boring 80 degree temp all year long)

Well here's to that message in the bottle analogy Bob. I hope summer in the city is good for you too. You can always tell summer is here when the Arizona license plates begin to clog the freeways. Otherwise not much change. We do have a form of nuclear winter along the beach area and we refer to it as May Gray and June Gloom.

Re: Just a thought
Joe, I think it's because you didn't word your post very well. The way you wrote it, it looks like you passed up a $100 signing in La Jolla, only to accept a $60 notarization in La Jolla an hour later. From what you wrote here, I'm guessing the $60 notarization was in your own town, not in La Jolla.
But that's not how it appears in your post, and that's why you've gotten a bunch of responses about combining appointments.
And your "do you own a signing service" response here is just weird. Why on earth would you jump to the conclusion from what Bob wrote that he must be a signing service trying to drive down fees?

Excellent Idea Bob...excellent
**The new realities of the NSA business may cause some NSAs to consider re-thinking, and possibly updating their business plan**
Mine has updated in a strange way, less business higher fee...it's either that or call it a hobby. This is not true for all...Texas, yep, it's a better plan. Be seriously committed to the call you get by charging enough to be committed and interested in doing it right.
Speaking of that, I have to go to my lawyer friend's office right now to close a Heloc...must close in an atty office, title co, lender branch, you know.
His cut is $1XX.XX whether it closes or not. Apparently, title co's think it is worth it.
My time is as well. I have to charge a significant amt to cover us both.
Last night he had one not close for the second time. Good loans, weird bwrs. He's getting $4XX.00 now for two loans that did not close.

Re: Excellent Idea Bob...excellent - my point
in that earlier post is that in many situations for lender to have a shot at closing the loan is worth it at a price that may surprise others. Otherwise, why would they go for that twice?
