Here's a new ID glitch (maybe)
Mrs Borrower's calif DL has her maiden name, no prob, she has a passport with married name. The weird part, she told me, she used to have her married name on her license. When she got it renewed last year, they made her change her name on her license to match her ss card(maiden) name. Huh??? She is a canadian citizen. Could that be why? Has anyone else run across this? I could see this causing all sorts of problems..

I think DMV goes by the SS card, so if the person got married and changed last name, the person should change it with social security first then drivers license.

Yeah, I see what you mean, but they have been married over 2o years and her married name had been on her license, they made her change it back. I imagine that she should change her ss card. But why did the dmv make her change now, after all these years?

Ca DMV is electronically linked to the SSA. The name on the license must match the SSA database. If someone doesn't change their name with the SSA, DMV now is required by state law to have the person change their name with SSA or revert to whatever name is on file at the SSA. The events of 9/11 caused the State of Ca to review and adjust policy and law related to how DL are issued.

Did that just start last year? ummm I think I better check my ssa name. Been married 25 years, but I don't think I ever changed it either.

Re: thank you!
It's been in place for awhile, but they are allowing current DL to expire before making people change their names.
