Why not refer the business
I got a call from a notary/signing agent with a signing for Monday afternoon in San Diego. The zip code put it just north of the split. Absolutely had to be done at 6PM. Anyone familiar with San Diego traffic knows that for fear of getting in a traffic snarl, to be on time anywhere at 6PM you must leave at 4 and if by some miracle you arrive early then wait around the signers neighborhood until 6. The offer was $75 and I asked for $125. The notary then said that she was only making $95. So she was going to arrange to send me the docs then cut me a check for $75 after she got paid and keep $20? I asked "why not refer me the business rather then try to squeeze $20 out of the deal"?
She refused.
Funny at $95 I wouldn't had had the nerve to refer it.

Why not indeed?r That's part of being a professional.
If I get a call for a signing that's geographically undersirable, I recommend someone who has impressed me with their ability to do a good job. If I'm busy, I recommend someone who may be able to do the job well. Usually I say "Just for this ONE signing. After this one, you have to call me exclusively." The caller chuckles along.
What goes around comes around.

Re: Why not refer the business - Thank you, Joe.
You have just made my day.
There is a person who will read this who should put it in her pipe and smoke it.

You're Right Joe, and BTW Thank You...
Thank you for that great referral -- a very early morning signing at LAX (I had to leave at 3:30am in the morning to get to the airport hotel by 6am and barely made it). Anyhow, it was from a high-roller title company in San Francisco who coordinated the Refi and HELOC for a very well-known actor and his Sonoma properties. So Joe, thanks for the Referral (he did not take a cut) and the $550 I was paid. Wonder if that makes up for all the mobile calls for Apostile's I've sent your way? Nahhh. Still owe ya!

Thanks Joe...
for being there for me to refer business to while I was on vacation! I agree with you... it's a business relationship, no need to scrounge some $ out of it! I see it as being available for each other when one can't be available.
I'm back from Lake Tahoe! Ready to start business again tomorrow.
