Borrower calls for a signing????

Gotta a call at 6:00 from borrower with a Heloc Loan that she needed notarized. She said the doc's were sent to her OvrNt and she was told to take them to UPS to be notarized and shipped out. When she got to the UPS Ship Ctr. they told they had no Notary. She said the man @ UPS was nice enough to look on-line for a Notary and I came up. She wanted me there right away - I told her I normally get $175 for a same night signing, she said fine. I told her I could be there in 30 mins to have her ID waiting. While I was getting ready to go she called to say her father-in-law knew someone who new a notary and that person would do it. Oh well... The question is...Is it normal for a borrower to call??

in this case wouldn't you be limited to charge your state allowed per notarization fee and travel fee?

There are a number of companies that tell borrowers to "find their own notary". Signed/Sealed is right in that if you're just notarizing the docs, it's just regular notary work
and you can only charge state/travel fees. I always ask, though, if they just want just the notary hat, or the signing agent hat that will ensure the docs are signed correctly and in all the right places, in which case the fee will be additional. In my view, I couldn't see charging someone more than $75 max for a simple HELOC that I did directly for them; I think many borrowers would recoil at a fee more than that.

charge them whatever you would charge someone else. If your fee for a HELOC for a signing service or title company for their area is $50, charge them $50. If you fee for a HELOC for that area is $200, charge them $200. Don't worry if they called you directly - your services are the same. If they want straight notary work, they probably don't want you as they can stop on almost any street corner to a tag & title notary for the straight notary fee without your travel.

I have had several calls from borrowers in my area, I also ask which hat I am to wear for them 99% of the time it is the notary hat in which case its usually $75.00 local regardless of how many pages I am to notarize this includes travel as I said it would be local. I have had a few of thier friends call for my services also.

I had a Br call yesterday about 6:30 am to get something notarized for his son's school. He came to me and I notarized his one paper. I didn't charge because it was for School. That's just me.
