OT:Re: Charles...

Charm... If you are referencing the palitable Polish pleasure in a tomato base, then I must admittedly testify as to my love for you and (kneeling) ask for your hand in marriage.

Good recipe for the casserole style if you need it

Category: Casserole
Ethnic Style: Polish

Ingredients:
head of cabbage, finely chopped
1 1/2 lb. ground beef
1 lb. ground fresh pork
2 c. instant rice
1 tsp. salt
8 slices crisp bacon, crumbled
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. poultry seasoning
4 tbs. brown sugar
2 tbs. lemon juice
med. can of tomato sauce
1 bottle chili sauce

Instructions:
Finely chop cabbage and set aside. Brown onion and meat in large skillet over medium-high heat. Combine rest of ingredients and combine with cabbage and stir together with meat-onion mixture. Mix everything else very well. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour in a small roaster. If too dry, add 1/2 cup beef broth to moisten. Good for potlucks. Reheats easily.

Re: Good recipe for the casserole style if you need it

Sherry, my recipe is much more simple, no bacon, and we use tomato soup instead of sauce, no pork, just beef and no chili sauce. I'm spoiled!

I've done the simple one as well but I can never get the darn meat mixture to stay in the cabbage leaves..LOL...This is just something different...Another favorite of mine is Strogonoff..yummy yummy and all I am making tonight is steak on the grill..How boring!

Re: Charm you certainly know how to get my attention!!!!

I'd love a copy of the recipe. In Russian we call them golubtzi but they were always wonderful. I haven't had stuffed peppers in decades (literally). Thanks

Re: Yum, You Guys Are Making Me Hungry For...

It seems that while I tried to escape the cold and wet of the Northern California coast by slipping down to the Southern California beach cities for a couple of weeks I brought the cold and damp with me. Today's a great day for some stick-to-your ribs comfort food like stuffed cabbage rolls or peppers. Unfortunately you don't find stuff like that on many restaurant menus in our area. All you guys are really making me long for some good old fashioned home cooking, I may have to make something for dinner tonight besides reservations!

Re: Yum, You Guys Are Making Me Hungry For...

ok Charles...

1 lb ground beef
onion chopped
salt & pepper
cooked rice
cut half head of cabbage into pieces
2 cans tomato soup, 1 can water.

In your casserole dish layer the botton with the chopped cabbage, form meat with onions, rice and spices into meatballs, salt, pepper, tuck into cabbage and pour the tomato soup over all. Cover dish with tin and bake on 350 for about 1.5 or so, take off to brown for another half hour. Grab a big French roll, butter and mmmmmm.....I'm going to Heaven in 2 hoursSmile

Simpler yet

My Polish friend who was the world's worst cook except for her Gaulbki casserole which was delicious. She used the bagged shredded cabbage from the grocery store and didn't cook the rice just added more water. Her nick name for it was Lazyman's Gaulbki!

Thge excess 40 lbs on my thighs is from

my husband's Romanian cabbage rolls.First he sours the whole heads of cabbage in a 50 gallon wooden barrel( in the out building thank goodness). then makes the rolls and sauerkraut. No tomatos for the stoic Transilvanians just plenty the that sauerkraut and ham hocks for flavor. Cornmeal layered with lots of buttery cheese as a side. I've died and gone the gastronomical heaven.
