Just made my initial call
for noon signing tomorrow. I tried earlier and got no answer or voice message. I noticed the area code completely different state, but assumed it was a cell phone for family and friends to stay in touch.
The woman's voice on the other end of the line was quite elderly, but very polite and cordial. I began by telling her that the noon appointment would depend on the time I got the docs and the mountain drive. She said no problem because she was available all day.
I told her where I was coming from and asked if she could give me specific driving directions to her house once I got into town. She replied oddly "you're driving?" "Well, um, yeah. Can you give me directions." "Well, I don't know if I can." The woman was so gentle and nice, I couldn't get upset with her. I began again and asked if there were any specific things I could be on the lookout for.
Suddenly it becomes crystal clear why the area code is in a different state: because she lives in a different state and no longer lives in the small mountain town. She is only refinancing the mountain property.
I took all the information for the correct signing location so I can pass it along when I have to cancel.
We talked probably 15 minutes total. It was like we've know each other for years. There was nothing awkward about it. She gave me her daughter and son-in-laws name and phone number because they live about 30 minutes from me and she knows they would love to meet me. I ended the call by telling her what a pleasure it was talking to her, and unless the TC wanted to put me on a plane, that another signing agent would contact her tomorrow. She told me that a room and bed would always be waiting for me if I ever made the visit.
Suddenly I miss my grandma that I lost eight years ago.

Re: *sniff* I miss my granny now, too!
There isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss my maternal Grandmother and her great specialty dishes. I kept the family tradition of visiting her once a week after I started having kids, for years, until she became sick, then my Mom and I were her caregivers. When she passed I was haunted for years by dreams of her surviving her cancer.

Ditto, Charm
I just returned to work yesterday from a 3 week bereavement leave. I went up north to take care of my Gma with her cancer during her last days. I was fortunate enough to be with her when she started her "new life". It was a beautiful testimony to her faith and mine. The initial post reminds me of my Granny, too. I can only hope to be as great a Gma as mine.

I feel for you and I'm sorry for your great loss.. Those Gramma's are the real backbones of some families and when they are no longer there, it leaves a huge void.

Funny what you remember
We used to visit my mom's godmother a couple times a year when we were growing up -- it was quite a drive. I have a few memories, but one really stands out. She always tried to give us treats, devil dogs, cupcakes, etc. -- but they were ALWAYS stale. It wasn't until after her death (stomach cancer) that I finally realized that she probably kept those treats specially for when she had kids visit her...it just shows how little she had us visit.
She never had kids & was married only very briefly (on a dare). She spent her life taking care of her younger brother, then her parents as they got older & sick. She was really special & missed very much.
Thanks for letting me share...

Re: P.S.
Just wanted to add that they found me on a different board for this signing, but if anyone here gets this refi, you had better treat this woman nice, or you're going to have to account to me!
