Great post Barbara...the unfortunate fact is that those who need to hear it will be clueless that it should ALSO apply to them and not just to "unprofessional" posters.

That was the shortened version. I wrote an epistle and shortened it. I will be glad that I did in the morning.

Re: Charles, PLEASE don't ask him to point them out! More wasted

Well actually I am on the Mendocino Coast right now and it is cold and very very wet and we have a flood watch in effect right now for the next 36 hours. I live on the banks of a river and it tends to flood about every 10 years. I missed the last flood on new years because I was in OC. I try to split my time in between Mendocino and OC and I'll be back in Mission Viejo Wednesday and probably until about the 25th when I'll return to Mendocino. I own an old Victorian commercial building downtown and I'm having a full foundation put under it and the construction will start around the 25th. The place used to be a bar and I'd like to sell the bar and equipment: nice all wood hand built bar, back bar and a marquis over the bar itself. If you know anyone who would like a beautiful antique bar (its too big for a home) with two complete stations, refrigeration, beer dispensing equipment, soda guns, CO2 equipment, the whole works let me know.

My primary home has been in Mendocino and when my daughter started college in OC one of the single family homes I have for rentals in Orange County came available and so I remodeled it for her and now when I make my monthly visit I stay there.

Anyway perhaps we could get together for breakfast or lunch or even coffee next week if you'd like. I was very disappointed with the Harbor House Cafe in Dana Point the last time I was there. I usually like their omelettes but last time mine was raw inside and I hate eggs that aren't set up. The Sunrise Cafe has changed hands so If you have any suggestions let me know. I dropped by the Fisherman on the Wharf after you mentioned it to me but they don't serve breakfast: it looked like a nice place, I liked their menu.

Charles_CA, You sure do get around, great life, lots of ....

knowledge. I agree, we used to love the Harbor House at Dana Point for breakfast, went almost every Sunday, went down hill, never go anymore. Sunrise cafe did change hands and isnt very good either BUT, Sarduccis in San Juan is great. It is the old Depot, right next to the train station and the ambience and food is wonderful. Also, Cedar Creek in San Juan is very good. The Fisherman has breakfast on Sundays only and it is a brunch I believe.
I have company here for 2 weeks so it may not be workable to try to hook up and meet, but maybe next time you are in the area would be great.
Thanks for all your great posts by the way, you and PAW are the best!

Re: What's a lemming?

Korey, et al. To expand your knowledge, "Lemming" is the act of following the crowd into an investment that will inevitably head for disaster. But in today's world, the term has expanded way past the investment environment into the vernacular world.

Re: What's a lemming? Hey PAW

I remember an early computer game that dealt with lemmings. And truth be known, the lemmings had to be protected by a leader -- you had to cover holes and such -- to keep the lemmings from killing themselves.

So then Beth...lemmings

If they needed a leader to follow (note key word "needed"Wink that sort of blows holes in JudyinLA's concept of the board, doesn't it? Never have I heard her post anything of value here, only criticism of those who do contribute.

Re: So then Beth...lemmings

Yep TitleGal. I don't think calling us a bunch of lemmings was a smart thing for Judy Smart. It blows her whole insult for those of us who have played that game.

Re: What's a lemming?

Actually Korey's definition of lemming is the more correct. The conduct of people following the crowd to disaster in numerous scenarios including investments is derived by way of analogy to the conduct of lemmings.

Re: What's a lemming?

Duh we know the actual definition. If you have ever played the game, you'll remember that the lemmings follow each other in a line "headed for disaster" if you don't cover the hole or make them a bridge or whatever. So if you'll think about it for a sec, you'll see that the game is pretty much the "following" the definition. No pun intended.

I have never played the game, nor was I referring to the game...only the analogy to which the conduct is compared. You can go back to playing now.

If you weren't referring to our previous conversation then why was it necessary to point out which analogy of lemming life was better suited to JudyinLa's namecalling tirade. Perhaps you should read before you post. And thanks, I will go back to playing now.

Re: What's a lemming?

I did in fact read the posts to which I responded. I invite you to do the same. I was not responding to JudyinLA's posting nor yours for that matter. I was responding to Lily/MD, Korey Humphreys and Paw's posts. I don't see any reference to a game in any of them.
Rather it is a requests and answers for a definintion of lemming. Somehow I don't think Webster had the game in mind in its definition.

By the way, the mass migration of lemmings does not in the least way resemble the orderly follow the leader style of game that you describe. It is a mass stampede that often ending in disaster.

Re: What's a lemming?

I agree that Korey's definition is a correct definition. However, the use of the term "Lemming" to indicate the **actions** of the lemmings rather than the animal, was, I believe, introduced in the investment community during the Great Depression. And yes, the term is obviously based on the animal's action.
