Ready to get started
I recieved my comission through my last employer two years ago and just recently found out that I can actually utalize it by being a mobile notary signing agent. Through my research I read that the best way to obtain initail trainig is to contact other notary signing agents in my area and possibly go on assignments with them. It suggested that this is the best training and the best way to network with other notaries in my area. How do I go about finding agents in my area who would be interested in taking someone on an assignment and is this truly the way to get started?

If you were running a successful business would you train a competitor?

Dawn, That is probably the easiest way to get started, however, most people are not willing to train someone that will be taking work from them. I hope you didn't fall into the "easy money" BS that seems to fly around! Competition in this business is fierce! And at this point, business has slowed in a number of areas so there is not as much work to be had. It would be tough to just now be coming into this business, I can't imagine how tough it is for those out there that have not been in long enough to build a good solid regular client base. I'm not trying to discourage you, if you think you can make it, then go for it! The best place to start is by using the search feature in this forum and reading back through all the old messages, most questions you will have have already been answered numerous times on this board. Don't EVER take a job for $50.00. You will lose money! I wish you the best of luck!

I also read that I do not want to be trained by people who are afraid that they may lose business if they helped someone get started. It said any succesful notary in this business became succesful by doing an excellent job for the companies they worked for and networking with other notaries. Infact one of the key elements in any successful business is networking. Im searching out those who are not afraid because I believe to be successful you have to look to others who are successful and learn from them and a truly successful person isnt afraid to help others in fear of losing their business.

"a truly successful person isnt afraid to help others in fear of losing their business."
With all due respect, that is a load of crap. A truly successful businessperson gets that way because they don't do stupid things like creating their own competition just to stroke their own ego. It's not about fear, it's about common sense.
I help others on this board. But I'm not stupid enough to take a total stranger under my wing and train them personally; what good would that do me? A truly successful businessperson knows when they have to be selfish to serve the needs of their business.
I think you're using "networking" as a euphamism for "not having to do the hard work myself". And I think you better come up with an alternate plan, because I don't see that one working all to well for you.

I read about networking with other agents through a signing agent traing course published by Victoria Ring. I dont believe a person is stupid if they are willing to help another get started. If one has enough confidence and they are passionate and care about the work that they do they shouldnt have to worry. I dont believe selfishness is the key to any success. If thats your mentality, with all due respect, your probably not very successful. People need people. Thats what makes the world go around.

And is Victoria Ring offerning all this wonderful advice out of the goodness of her heart and because she's passionate about the work she's doing? Nope, she's selling it and making money on it. Guess how much advice you would get from her if you didn't have cash in your hands?
I have yet to see you give a single reason why anybody should help you. Networking is mutually beneficial to everyone involved. What are YOU bringing to the table in your networking? People may need people, but we've all managed to get by so far without that other person being you.
And trust me Dawn, you should be so lucky to have me help you get started in this industry. I've been supporting myself completely with loan signings for over two years now. And it ain't cheap to live in Los Angeles.

Good starting point - message 33325
Read the above thread (the entire thread!). In fact print it out. Most people on this board are not afraid of healthy competition, but are not going to willing hand out information that they have worked hard and long for. My self, I believe in teaching you to fish instead of giving you a fish. It's much better for you in the long run. Read, read, research, research. If you read every single post on this board that is not O/T (off topic) you will get a really good education and the price is right! It just takes time. Or you can buy manuals or take classes (that information is also readily available on this board).

Re: Ready to get started--Dawn
Cali's right. No one is going to train someone else to take business from them. That's just the way it is. However, I was "trained" by someone who lived in an entirely different state. I would never become her competition for business. Most of what of the help she gave me was by phone or email. It was great. She even faxed me dummy copies of different forms to learn, etc. Or, try hooking up with a notary on the opposite end of Texas.

That's all you're looking for?
Because that's the opposite of what you asked in your first post where you stated "How do I go about finding agents in my area who would be interested in taking someone on an assignment".
