e-doc

How does one know if they can do e-docs? Do I need a program for this?

Anon, you can probably accept e-docs already.

Yes, you will need a program. After a while you'll see that you need several programs. Just in the past couple of days I've received documents requiring 3 different software programs to view and print them. Not all docs will be PDF. And I have had certain documents faxed to me.

But there's more to it than just having the equipment. There are a couple of things you can do:

1) Do a search on this site using the orange "Seach" tab. Use several different keywords (i.e. e-docs, edocs, efax, digital docs, ... etc.) Lots of valuable information. Spend a lot of time and read everything. Yes, it will seem to take forever, but you will learn a lot.

There's also some helpful information about printers on this site:

http://www.vitalsigning.com/notary.html

Scroll down to "Notary Signing Agent Materials"

2) If you want, you can email me ([e-mail address]) and I'll be glad to share with you what I've learned about handling e-docs (and still learning, because there's so much to learn). A lot depends on what kinds of services you want to provide, and what kinds of situations you foresee yourself getting into.

Yesterday I had a closing where a change needed to be made to the borrower's documents. I got the call to make the change while I was at the table with him. I'll be glad to tell you about it, and possible ways in which you can handle it.

Good luck.

You can also Pre-Download some common viewers/programs

at another NR member's very helpful site: www.PAWnotary.com. There's a lot of great things on Paul's site.

My experience has been that most of the time when receiving edocs, the email comes with a link for the viewer that's required for the docs sent. Always download to your hard drive somewhere - not your temp file. That way, you'll have the viewer for next time.

PS - If you have Adobe, you can download a "test" PDF file

at Paul's site: www.PAWnotary.com (be sure to select "Download Sample Docs-PDF)

Helps you get your feet wet and "experience" a simple dowload. Remember that not all edocs are viewed with a PDF file, some are all PDF, some are related to PDF and some are a stand-alone viewer. Edocs is a great way to make more money and be more marketable in our industry.

Re: You can also Pre-Download some common viewers/programs

Yes all the viewers (software) I have to view docs have come from the company sending me the docs. When they call you for a signing they may ask if you have a certain viewer or software, if not they will send it along in the email with the documents.
One important thing is about your printer. Most companies like to see HP printers. They seem to come with the necessary configuration. I have a Brothers brand laser printer. It comes with PCL6 capability. It has to do with being able to read and convert the language correctly to your printer. If you don't have the proper language in your printer you may see a bunch of letter and or numbers print that make no sense. If you are concerned initially when you are accepting an assignment of edocs, ask them how they will be sent to you i.e. pdf or what then you can get ahead of the game if it's other than pdf and tell them you don't have that viewer software, could they email it to you or email you the site to go download it. Sometimes they will still ask me and sometimes send to be sure I have the most up to date version.
