it's an icon that people use that shows up by their username on messageboards.

Generally a picture that's attached to a message board that identifies a poster as to their personality.

I wish we could use them here. Mine would be a chewed up pair of cute shoes, and a sad little Chihuahua with his little neck in a noose.

Before multi-player video games, an avatar was a human or animal incarnation of a Hindu deity. When multi-player video games came on the scene, the word avatar was borrowed to describe how a player appears to other players in the games. Some computer discussion sites that let players include a picture with their posts like to think these pictures are avatars, but that's wishful thinking.

Yes, a real avatar is animated. It represents one of the game player and performs whatever actions the player orders it to perform.
