While I still have the Dell 1700 and it's being used in my car as it has a small enough foot print to fit between the front-back seat. The best and most economical office printer for this job IMO now a day is the HP4100, cost wise. A 10,000 page cartridge is less than $25 on Ebay or $20 refill.
