Multifuction machine recommendations? Already did search

Hello All! I've been mostly a lurker for the past year on these boards and have gained quite a lot of insight on everything from soup to nuts in the SA business.

I'm in the market for a multifunction printer and I've been looking at the HP 3380. One drawback is that it only prints 20ppm.

I did a search on NotRot but didn't find the answers I was looking for. Here are my questions:

1. Is there a better multifunction printer that prints faster and has dual tray capability? I saw PAW's message that the HP 3380 was NOT a dual tray machine. I know I can find regular printers that will print faster, but I need a multifunction machine that will also copy and fax.

2. If the HP 3380 is the best multifunction machine out there, can I buy extra memory for it? If so, what will it do for me? I was unclear if the extra memory only helped to download the document to the printer faster, or if it actually sped up the ppm output speed.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

-Anna

My HP 3015 chugs away nicely...I think Becca hates hers...I am lower volume than she is and perhaps that is why.

I really like my Brother 8840D. I do have dual paper trays, but it won't automatically select. Which is ok with me. I can sort pdf's by size if I feel the need to print on both letter and legal.

NCLisa... how do you sort by size?

Dumb question, I know. Is this a printer-specific thing or have I been missing something this neat for a really loooooooooong time?

Re: NCLisa... how do you sort by size?

If you view the pdf file by "pages" you can see what is letter and legal. I just move all the legal to the beginning and all the letter to the end, or vice versa. Takes about 2 minutes. I put the docs in my order anyway, so order is no concern.

Re: NCLisa... how do you sort by size?

How do you "move all the legal to the beginning and all the letter to the end" in a pdf file? I have been going through the pages, selecting letter size in sequence, then all legal in sequence and it is VERY time consuming. I know that many signing agents print all legal, but I am a bit anal about printing them as sent.

I recommend the Brother 8440

I had a long talk with the man in charge of the printers/multifunction machines/section/ etc at Staples in Moreno Valley Calif and this fellow said it was the best multifunction machine available at this time for the price. $399 (Staples) He said it was actually a better machine than many available for more than $399.
I recommend this multifunction machine to every loan signing class I teach.

He stated it is a much better multifunction machine than the HP 3015 and I agree as my son bought one and we were both not impressed with this machine.

I have always been a huge HP fan so this is something new for me to recommend a Brother. I had a Brother 1440 four years ago and it was worthless for loan signing. I own a HP 1200 & Hp 1300 but they have printed thousands of papers and are getting tired.

The Brother 8440 is pcl 6 compliant and a dual tray can be purchased. I am so impressed with this machine that I put a stop alert on EBay and bought a "refurbished" one for $240 plus $30 to send it.

Does this have the auto tray selection? I can not find it up on Brothers site....

Anna - I mentioned my HP 3510, however, it's not a dual tray. I just print everything on legal paper.

Hi All! Thank you for the recommendations. I was also looking at a Brother 8440--it was up there with my HP choices. I did some more research yesterday and ran across the HP 3390 which does have dual tray capability. Now I just have to hunt down a good price. Thanks again!
