New Notary Agent
Hello All,
I am new to the Notary Business, I have taken a Title Agent Course but unfortunately do to lack of experience have not been able to find employment so I thought I would try contracting my services as a Mobile Notary. I was wondering if someone would be will to give some advice as to how to get started. If there is anyone out there in the Orlando Florida area that would be willing to meet w/ me @ a public setting of course I would be willing to compensate for your time. I am a very fast learner I just need to get my foot in the door, I just basically need to see maybe 1 or 2 signings then I will be on my way. Just need someone willing to share the knowledge.
Well hope to here from someone soon.
e-mail address I can be reached at is: [e-mail address]

Re: New Financier....Too funny - Single Parenting, just like
me being "The Widow Stone" There are two marriages before the widow's weeds, but the widow thing is always a more respectable and dignified way of presenting myself. Evokes just a little bit more chivalry and sympathy...kind of like the ol' single parent routine.
Problem is with the "single parent" thing here...
How many of us are / were single parents raising kids?
LOL...I remember a lawyer I worked for during one of my five year single parenting phases...with his eyes sparkling he started to explain to me why he was going to take the topless dancer as a pro bono (free) DWI client when it was high time for me to have a bonus, raise, or something to show for my long hours. In other words, another pointless case without value...another notch on his belt in the sack...oh puhlease....
I was looking at him like he was a pile of cat manure as he tried to explain..."now, Brenda...she's a single mother." (So was I...and, I worked the courthouse records during lunch doing background checks for a second job.)
So I say, "Yeah...I'm a single mother, too. But I make it look so effortless you forget. Take your couch fee but find another secretary unless you pay me what I am worth -- a bonus today would be nice."
====BTW==== This post has no point...it's just a slice of my lurid life.

Yes I have to admit LK that was funny.
But now back to being nice. I think anon shows some zeal and ambition. She apparently is not looking for a freebie since she is willing to pay someone for their time.
Anon, Have you done any searches on the net to find information on this field? You may email me if you like and I will give you a few directions to look to get you started. You can find my email address if you click on my name 'lulu' and it will take you to my info.

Be aware that you are coming to a site loaded with people who make their entire living doing what you want to do for pin money. What if someone came to your 9 to 5 job and beat YOU out of your livlihood? You wannabees all think you're entitled. Baloney....what makes you think anybody on this board owes you or any of your ilk a leg up? Do me a favor and go back to your guaranteed 9 to 5 with benefits job and leave this profession to the professionals who know what their doing !

Re: New Notary Agent....
Florida is saturated with signing agents. Unfortunately a lot of them are doing signings for "pin money" and will work for less than those of us who are doing it full time and is our only source of income. Fortunately as the amount of signings are slowing down, the companies are calling their "professionals" first.
When I started doing this I was only one of a couple doing it in my county. There was no-one to go on a signing with to learn the business. Most companies do not like a signing agent taking along a "ride along" - privacy issues. Those that have been in this business before the NNA started their signing agent side had no help getting started. There were message boards we could ask questions regarding a particular loan document we may have been unfamiliar with, but no-one would want to train their competition by helping them get started.
The best way for anyone to get started is to make sure they know their notary laws inside out, because it is mainly about correct notarizations. Pay to be listed on sites like this one Invest in a good training guide like the one from the Signing Registry (which IMHO is the best one in the industry).
If you are willing to travel to Palm Bay, and are willing to pay for my time I am willing to go over some different types of loan docs with you and make sure you are thoroughly conversant with Florida Notary laws - but my experience does not come cheap. You can contact me through my link.

There are lots of cheap car salesmen in Florida as well I'm sure. What I'm getting at is they will be weeded out by the industry in good time. Service and customer satisfaction are the key to it all.
Someone once told me in the Construction business, not to worry about my competition. If I spend too much time worrying about my competition, I'm not devoting enough time to the important stuff, my business and my business will hurt for it.

Read and understand message 33325 and then maybe you could
consider yourself part time competition. It used to be that you couldn't post without a link to this message appearing so that signing agents don't have to answer the same questions over and over. Best of luck, not the best of times to be starting out
Almost everything you need to know to become successful Posted by Dorothy/MI of ? on 4/22/05 11:00am Msg #33325 from 68.248.9.100 The following is a compilation from several experienced people that frequent this board, i.e., Brenda- TX (most of the list below is from her), Sylvia/FL, Art/MD. This appeared in a number of posts and I have copied and pasted it, and saved it for future reference, along with my general advice to newbies (Hugh, please excuse me for using your favorite term) that I usually post in response to questions about getting started.
If you know what a notary signing agent is, then you probably know whether or not you have enough background to wing it or whether you need to take a class.
Depending on the area that you are in, you may or may not be able to get work, i.e. many areas are saturated with notaries who fell for the NNA get rich quick scheme. Having said that, if you think you want to pursue this business, read every notary board you can find, learn all that you can learn, network (if possible) with other notaries and MARKET, MARKET, MARKET yourself. There is no fast road to success. Also be sure that you want the life style that we have to live (last minute signings, slow and or low pay, not being able to have much of a social life, especially from the 15th to the 25th of each month, be prepared to sit at a kitchen table trying to work while dinner was cooking, phones ringing and borrowers jumping up to answer, kids screaming, dogs barking, couples fighting, etc). All of us could tell you stories that would either curl your hair, or make it fall out,. You also should be someone who does not require a structured life because in this business (if you treat it like a business and not just pin money) almost everything is subject to change. It is not unusual to have five signings in your appointment book and end up with one or none due to cancellations or rescheduling! You will have little or no control over your schedule; you might have one for 9 a.m. and not another thing until 8 or 9 p.m. or 4 or 5 one day and then none for the next several days. And the problem with starting new in a saturated market is that everyone wants experience and references. When I started 3 years ago the business was at its zenith and the first 2 or 3 months, I was lucky to get 2 or 3 signings a week and I turned down nothing! I also worked at least 40 hours a week just trying to get business. Also, you will need a fast computer, a hi speed internet connection, a fast laser printer(PCL6), a plain paper fax machine, a copier, a reliable car and a cell phone with at least 1500 anytime minutes. Don't expect to recoup your initial investment for at least six to twelve months.
Here are some suggestions:
(1) Purchase Kathy Poston's book (see http://www.signingregistry.info) Consider the Signing Registry's mentor program.
(2) Purchase Monica's book (see http://www.amrnotary.com)
(3) Make sure to learn your state notary laws well.
(4) Do a google search for notary signing agent training.
(5) Read http://www.gomobilenotary.com and this forum to get the feel for what the job involves.
(6) Consult the Small Business Admin's site at http://www.sba.gov to learn how to research your area's opportunity. Crunch the numbers and see if you think you can make a business of it by the area you will serve.
(7) Consider buying Laura Vestanen's book on developing non-loan business. See her website at http://www.professionalnotary.com. Her book is about $10.
(8) Advertise yourself here for free as a mobile notary. Better idea - purchase the $39.95 membership and use the zip code tool and the list of signing services to market yourself.
(9) Read the link listed in my profile on what I did to get started.
(10) Ask your state's Secretary of State office if they recommend any courses for you.
(11) When you post here, if you want to get more specific help, create yourself a handle and include your state's two letter abbreviation (BrendaTX, for instance)
(12) Read http://www.NotaryDepot.com - get a free advertisement there.
(13) Get a website. (Try http://design.adaptiveview.com/ - $200 for the whole thing.)
(14) Have business cards made. (http://www.vistaprint.com)
(15) Some say read http://50statenotary.com, and some say not to read it. Victoria Ring writes a book with a good overview on the business. (Disclaimer: don't take anything anyone says at face value...do your own research, but you can get "concepts" from her book.) There is a section in her newest edition on marketing to title companies and lenders, if you are interested.
(16) Read forums and email a notary from your state, but don't pick someone from your own backyard or you may be disappointed. For instance, I would never train my competition. I think it's foolish to be trained BY your competition. A notary four hours away might be willing to chat awhile on the phone with you about how to get started for YOUR area.
(17) Peruse used book stores/thrift stores/library used book sales and pick up books on related industries such as mortgage, finance, real estate, property law.
(18) Consider a real estate finance class (Thanks Joan OH)
(19) Contact http://www.signingregistry.info0 for information on their training course. They sell a book.

(Find a brief explanation of these at http://www.signingregistry.info3 [thank you Dogmonger!])
(21) Determine all zip codes you will service. Make a chart in Excel with these Column Headings
Zip - City - County - Travel Fee - Base Fee - Total Overnight Fee - Total eDocs Fee - Travel Time -
(22) Figure these amounts for every Zip Code you service. Keep the chart over your desk, in your car and in your calendar.
(23) If you want to use a calendar online, try http://www.signingregistry.info4
Buy an HP laser printer with the correct PCL drivers Buy a fax machine (for outgoing faxes) Subscribe to MaxEmail for incoming faxes Buy a copier (or just get an all-in-one) Make sure you have a cell phone with good reception and plenty of minutes. Better to have DSL or Cable for downloading edocs. Stock in Bayer aspirin for the headaches
Consider getting a digital recorder. Use to make notes etc while driving. Unless you have 4 hands, it's hard to drive, drink coffee, write down a phone number and name at the same time.
Always make sure you have ample supplies of legal paper, and refill toner for the printer cartridge.
If you do all of the above, YOU WILL BE A SUCCESSFUL SIGNING AGENT. However, there are no short cuts that I am aware of unless you have an uncle in the business.

I am NOT an idiot, as I did not fall for all the deceptive advertising practices of the NNA, Huckleberry and the likes, as you did. I had been in Real Estate for three years while I was earning my Paralegal Degree. After school, I got a job at a local Title Company as a lowly processor. I worked my way up to pre/post closer and eventually to closer. I learned the business on the inside and knew the business inside out, top to bottom. The Chase broker in town told me about mobile closers. I ran into a gal I had known from my advertising business and she told me she was a mobile loan closer. I asked her about it and realized it was right up my ally.
At about the same time I learned of this new profession, the Title Company that I was working for was going through major changes, thanks to the owners crazy wife screaming at us for using too much toilet paper. Shortly after the wicked witch took over operations of the 5 title Companies, 85% of the staff left, me included. I decided to try the mobile thing while I collected unemployment.
So you see, many people in this business had NO help in the begining just a killer work ethic and the drive to be self employed. Sylvia and Paul were a great help to me, in the begining, but niether took my to a signing, told me how to market or gave me their list of contacts and I never-ever asked. I did ask about Notarial questions (I was a good closer, but not a good Notary, when I began) and I ALWAYS got the right answers.
Oh, and who ever told you that there was plenty of business in Florida was blowing smoke up your arse. The market has slowed to a trickle and if you don't have good solid contacts and repeat clientele, you will struggle to make money in this business. Hey, I'll be glad to send you all the $40 & $50 jobs here in Vero. Come On Down! Hope you have a cheap babysitter.

Re: New Notary Agent....please read...and you too!
We should all be the professionals we claim to be. I've been appalled at some of the really immature and hateful remarks that are thrown around at 'newbies'. Sure new people should search before they ask, but it doesn't pan out like that and they feel like this is the place that their questions will be answered. Ignore it but don't antagonize. A short, professional response should suffice.
It's not like there's a big sign that says 'DON"T ASK QUESTIONS'. The topic of searching the archive first doesn't even appear until #5. It should be #1 if it's causing that much of a problem. Or better yet, just be done with it and create a new signing agent board.
The 2nd sentence wording for rules and guidelines actually says:
"It was created to allow professional notaries public to share experiences, advice and opinions with other members of the profession."
We are professionals and whether you like it or not, there are going to be new people who ask questions right away. If you can't be short and professional, don't respond at all.
And whoever wrote that response about 'what makes you think anybody owes you a leg up' should be banned. Totally uncalled for and definitely not in the spirit of what a message board is all about!

I agree. I have been very appalled at the recent marks against newbies. I am at the point of not even wanting to post, or even comming to this web site. I am asking questions not to take work away from anyone but most seem to be afraid at what threat I am. I have not seemed to find anyone in my area that seems to post so I did not realize that I would be making the experienced mad. Sham on those who think that they are being professionals when they dog on us or anyone in the world.

OK....you're in FL along w/Mr newbie. Why don't you contact him, give him a leg up and let him eat YOUR lunch? To me "Professional" means that's how a person puts bread on his family's table. I don't cotton to people who want to take another's full time profession and turn into their pin money hobby. Maybe I was less than cordial, but I meant every word. Want a part time job?? get one at Wal Mart!

You know, I don't have to hide behind an anonymous name. Even though I might be reamed, it is preferable to cowardice.
And I'll tell you what. I would help ANYBODY in a heartbeat. Notaries don't have to be catty or territorial. What they should do is band together in their propsective area and make sure all the new people don't lowball them by SHOWING them the ropes and what the pay is in that area so the playing field isn't stacked against them and they don't HAVE to go broke.
In fact, I believe that being a professional is conforming to the ethical standards of your profession which should be beyond reproach as a public official. JMHO

Re: OMG, Cali...I so adore you...and you too Becca
Between the two of you, you're the reality of this reality series online, of the notary world. You are much like Cali!
When I reflect, I need to be more like Brenda. She's gracious in the Texas tradition of southern belle's. Or, I need to be more like Renee, sticking always to Topic, and offering up the best in philosophy and human understanding (well, actually Brenda's pretty good at that too) and tidbits from the world of lending that are precious to everyone here..
But, in my heart of heart's, Cali has it - the unvarnished truth, in all it's glory. I just wish he was ... well, you know.
I just love a post from the Newbie, cheerful as a bird chirping...."HI! Oh, do tell me how to be a notary! Gee Whizakers, thanks for everything!" Then sit back and watch reality set in and see the chirping bird get down to gutter level and get nasty.
It's about as predictable as Old Faithful, but it's weekly entertainment.

See there you guys go again. Last really bad post or threads of posts were people trying to give bad leads as good ones to newbies. I found that to be awful. But now we're wishing them dead! I have to say that is exceptionally poor taste out of Calinotary with the past month or so in his life. (with respect, Calinotary) but what is it with you two and people like you? Looks to me like we have Chip and PMS in our midst.
Seems to me bad attitude is a reflection of stress. Is the industry too much pressure for ya?

Wishing them dead? Lulu, your stress level is affecting you, what a horrible thing to say. It's when you RELAX that you can laugh about life and all the "stuff" in it, especially on something so unimportant as an online forum.
And, if the laughter doesn't work, there's always Prozac.

Well, yes, it was a bit extreme lulu
however, the original poster was so extremely not getting it (reason, advice and everything else posted here for the original question) that it can be argued successfully that extreme dumb deserves extreme statements.
Lulu, truthfully, can you imagine going into a business without knowing one thing? The investment, the time, and walk right into a professional forum with such a statement?
Actually I suspect it was a set up for a train-wreck of a thread. It that's the case, I'll give the original poster a small bit of respect.

I would say that's a good possibility if the anon hadn't emailed me. But then that doesn't prove otherwise either. I really appreciate the ability to state a disapproval without things escalating. This one started to remind of one maybe a month ago when a new gal came on like gang busters and chewing everyone out for chewing her out. LOL
I did tell this person in my email response that their way of speaking was going to make all come down on them like vultures and the more they responded in that manner the more the vultures would come. Sorry for the vulture reference but I guess I was trying to put across a mass retaliation type thing. Once again, I will come to anon's defense in that they weren't looking for a freebie or hand-out. It's the first I've seen offering to pay since I've been posting at the beginning of the year.
Funny how things like that neener, neener can make all the difference also in determining the attitude or mentality be which a message is presented. Like that Cali, got a laugh out of it. Nitie nite all. Have a good evening.

It would certainly help the newcomers here if things were topically organized. I think it is dreadful how nasty people are on here when anyone asks a question.
How many pages is this forum? If it were topically organized, one could look in the proper topic and would not BOTHER those of you who are holier than thou about anyone asking questions.

"How many pages is this forum?"
There are over 120,000 messages posted. When I first found this site it was suggested that I begin at message number one and start reading - which is exactly what I did.
Since then I have notarized over 1000 documents - over 250 loan packages. I have never made an error and I have never had a problem receiving payments. The information here is invaluable if you take advantage of the forum.

There is so much more to notary work then a few drive bys, money doesn't always speak volumes in my book. I have helped several newbies and never expected or accepted anything in return. But get real this is a business beit not rocket science but hey, one needs to know what they are doing . NO OFFENSE ANON.....

free. If someone wants to become a well-trained NSA...I'll do it...I'd advise all vets so inclined to consider that practice as well. I have encouraged Paw to do so in the past (how valuable would his training be!!!) and others who are good at this should train people not in their area for a reasonable price.
If you wanna know how to make soap...same price!
The other day a woman called me to find out what I thought about her making a certain kind of soap.
I said "yes! great! doit!"
She said, but it is so complicated! Nope, I told her...if you are a neat person in the kitchen do a search and start making soap. Well...turns out she needed to "hear" it - googling was not easy for her. Since she is a friend, I told her to get pencil and let me tell you how simple this is.
Funny thing...she was floored because she had no idea I find lye soapmaking therapeutic...or that I just like to make soap. Anyhow, I walked her through it...but even SOAPMAKERS sell their knowledge in books and in tutorial sessions.
An hour and fifteen min. later she was off to buy a can of Red Devil Lye and five pounds of lard. Next week, I will tell her how to make the clear stuff.

Yes one needs to know what they are doing and I believe that is exactly what she is trying to do and offering to pay for it. I see her post as nothing different than someone going on and buying training online. She came on and said 'I want to learn and I'm willing to pay for it.'
The second paragraph was just an afterthought. I just wanted you to know I was chuckling as I was responding to you on the be nice message. No harm done right? Well, you may be right there Jezebel, I got a call today from child number two, she announced to me over the cell while I was at work, she was in Vegas and had eloped.......I was of course silent. She said don't you have anything to say....yes I think I'm stunned..... She repeats well......What should I do, I ask about what, telling dad? I said don't, allow me to tell him you know it takes your father a while to ease into the things we must ultimately accept. I called hubby, he said I'm going to be sick, and he hasn't spoken the rest of the day. He did promptly call his daughter now in her 20's and tell her a thing or two. I however stunned, remember 32 years ago eloping as well with this hubby/dad and his father being just as outraged..... I suggested number two child, lay low, allow dad to cool off, he will be sorry for his words. I had two signings tonight and all I could think of was good, I'll be busy he'll have to stew alone. Let me know if anyone wants to see a picture of the bride and groom, not the best but if you know Vegas weddings it was better then mine. We wear jeans and tee-shirts and grabbed two drunks off the street but still together after 32 years......
