Non SA notary work
Is there anyone here that has their focus on Notary business outside of the signing agent world? I see many posts dealig with all aspects of loans and the headache involved. I am half tempted to remove my name for signing agents lists, just based on the problems I've seen posted here. All of my work during the last few months has been simple, quick, profitable, (non signing) notary work. Why put up with the headache of signing agent work? Is the money really worth the time and problems? Everyone complains about the low fees, and all other hassles. So why do it? I did a simple attest to photcopies job tonight: Charged 40 dollars (5.00 per page) for my ten minutes of work. NO borrowers, lenders, agents, problems or complaints. Just me, the client, the photo copy machine, a few minutes work, and home in time for dinner. SO again I ask: WHy do signing work?

Yes, although I still accept loan signings. I have spent the last year building my local business base. Local companies use me on a regular basis. Then there are the normal notarizations for the general public. 70% of my business comes from that and the other 30% is loan signings.

Because experience with signing loan documents, the knowledge you gain from various loan signing situations, and the associations you build from working with various lenders and title companies can be the springboard to other careers in real estate. Think outside the box.

Great answer if you want it. I, however, am retired with 2 pensions and do not need, nor want a career. I can only guess that there are others like me out here in notary land. My original point is that there seems to be a LOT of complaining, headaches, and problems with SA work. I have not seen a single post of someone COMPLAING about the 'contents of a safe deposit box' or 'power of attorney' form they had to Notarize., just a thought....

Heres a crazy one I did recently. Even with over 1000 Notaries in my county, I walked into the local tatto palor and gave them my card. Tatto places (at least in my town) want their younger patrons (under18) to get permission form parents for peircings and tatto's (with a notary stamp). Yet NOT A SINGLE notary had walked into this business to offer their services. Over 1000 other notaries in my county and NONE had walked in or called this business. I now have 5 places in town that call only me at least 3 times every weekend, I charge them a 25.00 everytime (you do the math). This was just one of the things I did. Look at all the things you are able to do as a notary and then start going to to the places that need those things, be creative. IE: a bank needs their safety deposit boxes verified for contents when someone leaves items and they can not be found. The bank will not use their own notary (even if they have several on staff) they most always call an outside person (IE: YOU). Have fun and good luck.

Jax could I ask what state you are in? I've been trying to find some info on whether parental consents for tattoos were required to be notarized and I can't seem to find anything. Or is this just a preference by the tattoo parlors you visited?
You have read my mind I've been going through the yellow pages getting ideas of all local companies that may need outside notary services.

I'm in florida (Jacksonville) thus: Jax Notary. I do not know if it is law, or required from all tattoo places. I just saw it and asked (Really glad I did). Good luck.

You need to do some homework...get a notebook and make notes. After you read #33325, the whole thread, go through this forum and read posts...you'll learn a lot.
I have been asking questions and reading for two and a half years.

Because of the highly personal nature of notary service former clients will continue to call. The notary becomes part of a clients business "family". So for the past 8 years along with the thousands of successful loan signings I have built up a loyal mobile notary business. These are my $40 and 50 dollar meetings that last 10 minutes and I love them.

"SO again I ask: WHy do signing work?"
Because I have rent to pay, a car payment to pay, food to buy, etc. I can't make $4000 - $5000 per month hoping I get a whole bunch of $40 notary jobs. I can make that much doing loan signings.
We all have different financial needs. Not all of us have two pensions rolling in each month, and I find your post to be quite insulting to those of us who are working hard to earn a living from our loan signings.

The intent was not to insult. I am just amazed at all of the negative talk on this board and as I mentioned in a post above "I've never seen anyone COMPLAIN about the safety deposit box veification or power of attorney that they had to notirize. Yes, I do understand that SA work will pay well. But which is better?: 100 dollars from one person or 40 dollars from 10 people? (when both are done in the same time frame). Please do not be offended. This was just a conversation with the question in my mind "If all thses hassle is out there in the SA world...why do it?, when there is a lot of other work possible as a notary." Have a great day and I really do hope your business does well.

Jax I think the insult was the fact that you get paid whether you leave the house or not. Therefore why don't you just stay home? As you probably already know, once you get half a dozen or so mobile calls coming in a day this stuff gets fun and you have nothing to complain about. Just be careful not to gloat.
I does take a special person to be a good NSA. The ability to start a NSA assignment, stay focused throughout all the many twists and turns involved in manufacturing a successful signing is an art in itself. Then multiply that times 2, 3 or even 4 assignments happening simultaneously every day! Exhausting! Then factor in a family life because most of these NSA's are moms. That's why NSA's burn out. All the complaints and meanness you read on these message boards is a necessary form of therapy. Otherwise the family suffers even more. The evil signing services are to blame but you can only rant in private because nobody cares except.... the BOARD!

Depends on where you are located. In MN notaries can only charge $1. In CA notaries can charge $10. Guess where it makes more sense to do non-loan work?

I guess I just don't hold the same animosity of some notaries/SAs. Whether we do non-loan work or other, to each his own. I guess I just take the faxing etc in stride. Sometimes we are further ahead when it's an easy one and sometimes we aren't when their is a lot of time in faxing and split docs. I just don't find the need to rant about it. It's part of life, as we drive down the street and someone is going slow in front of us blocking our time agenda, we grumble. In an ideal world there would never be anyone in our way and we could go about our day in our good ol' time. Additionally, standing in the store line, if there were never any lines to stand in we could get a lot more done. These are in an ideal world. As such, if we got paid exactly what we wanted and did exactly what we wanted for that pay, that would be an ideal world. Well I'm sorry. The world is full of ups and downs. That's what makes life interesting, makes us appreciate the ups. As current discussions have said 'life is too short'. Jax, I found your question to be a legitimate one looking for people to discuss the pros and cons of SA work vs non-loan work. Nothing to be offended by. We all have to make a living. It's not like that is a personal agenda for the few. We all have to make a living. We will do it however we need to or see fit. It does not mean we cannot discuss it just as it does not mean notaries and SAs cannot discuss the ups and downs of time consuming faxing and split packages etc. I believe with the slowing of the mortgage industry this is a very relevant topic of discussion. Economics teaches us that industry changes. As it changes, jobs change, roles change. When an industry changes it is replaced with yet another in which we must evolve. There is a poster I used to see and adore. It said if you are not changing you are standing still and if you are standing still you are drowning. (Something to that affect). I choose to be one that is changing, constantly evolving into whatever role life gives me. Take it in stride or go down with the ship.
