Thanks Dee.

Does Florida have a thumbprint requirement for transactions involving RE? In California this was started in Los Angeles county because of similar frauds back a few years ago. The secretary of state's office (March Fong Eu) picked up on that and made it a statewide requirement.

Re: Thanks Dee.

No thumbprint requirement; I believe it is ILLEGAL to get a fingerprint on any recordable document in FL. I'm not sure if this means on the document itself, or in the journal or both.

Not illegal

It is not illegal to request the signer place a thumbprint on a document or in a journal. However, no adverse actions can be done if the signer refuses.

From page 67 of the Florida Governor's Reference Manual for Notaries (2001):

Florida law does not require, nor authorize, notaries to take
fingerprints from persons whose signatures they notarize. Many
notary journals or records books allow space for a thumbprint, but
this feature is optional. If there is no objection from the signer, you may
record a thumbprint in your journal. However, you should not refuse to
provide notary services based solely on the person’s refusal to provide a
fingerprint in your record book.
