TOTALLY OT-German Shepard Dogs-Read only if interested
I purchased a German Shepherd Dog yesterday, a surprise for my hubby's birthday June 10. I grew with shepherds and discovered I knew very little about the actual breed, once my investigation began. I'm more of a rescue animal type, any Heinz 57 will do. Only once, did I pay big bucks for a pooch, and he ended up having cataracts but a wonderful animal. I debated before this purchase now in my 50's, am I really up for toilet training a pup, the chewing and all the other puppy nonsense that goes with it. My husband is a man who rarely wants for anything and he seldom spend dollars, he just doesn't care about material things. Money is hard for him to spend. Anyhow I went online to breeders.net, a wonderful site that can give you breeders in your area for any dog that interest you. After my initial phone call when all my questions were answered, color, sex, lines, when would the dog be ready? I plotted and planned my adventure to the breeder, left work early (three day weekend no biggy) took back roads I haven't been on in years and WOW the growth and housing tracts in areas, I had no idea. Anyhow I get to the breeders, of course fenced yard, horses, and GERMAN SHEPHERDS EVERYWHERE, OMG......I wait outside gated area, a young daughter runs up to the fence, says my mom will be here soon, fence is locked, daughter hops over fence, jumps in fast car, starts engine with radio blasting. I'm thinking wild teen I better move my car, I ask can you get out around my car, NO RESPONSE, tunes too loud..... Bye Bye Owner approaches fence, clearly a hard working woman, years younger then me I suspect but this type of work has left her skin harsh and dry, hair long and touched with gray, lovely figure(TOO BUSY NO TIME TO NIBBLE), dirt under her nails from a life spent working in an area she loves. Underneath all the roughness is clearly a pretty woman.....but she has no time for pretty.....she most likely works 24-7......hard working woman, drives a truck of course... OK back to pooches......little Germans running everywhere, they are priceless, actually NO THEY ARE NOT, owners has a price on every last one of them and the price rises depending on who is mom and dad. Now I don't really care anything about bloodlines, just want a GERMAN SHEPHERD, OK you've got your red and blacks, silver and blacks, tan and blacks, and so on...I say no kidding I never thought much about color, just looked at the breed and thought OH SO PRETTY. OK, I'm only interested in males, owner places all males in smaller fenced area, long hair shepherds or short hair, URGGGGG more hair to clean is going through my mind and with two cats and a long haired dog already I better got with short hair. I'm trying to study the personality and faces of the dogs, all were excited to see me when I first arrived, now some have pooped out, others are wrestling with their siblings, tough decision but not life threatening. OK I say which one is what price, they begin at 800, yes I said 800, then move up to 1400. I say well I can't tell much about them as I watch them but I like the tan and dark, how much, her reply 800. OK, I'll take him.......he was not from this current litter and is ready to go now. I said I'd like you to keep him until I collect him on June 9 the day before my hubby's birthday. OK done, always a relief once you have decided and selected a gift.... The stage will be set, Bruce (the hubby) will arrive home about 5 on June 9th, he begins his vacation that Saturday and we leave for Oregon the following Wednesday, I have rented a beach house that takes pets and both old dog and new pup will be going, cats stay home, daughter will check on them every other day. Back to June 9, hubby walks in that day to find "Schultzie" yes he already selected a name if he got a GERMAN Shepherd..... sitting in a cage on the counter with a blue lable shaped like a bone that reads, Happy Birthday Bruce, I'm Schultzie.......
