printing pdf files
I have been printing e-docs for over a year now without much trouble. I've read posts about trouble printing pdf files and never experienced it until a few months ago. Last week I received a pdf file from Lenders First Choice that took two hours to print. I re-read the posts about this problem and have tried all the suggestions. I have adobe 7.0, a HP 1320 printer and SBC DSL. Memory is not a problem.
Ever since the package from Lenders First Choice, all the docs received since then are also printing excruiatingly slow. I'm not a techy, so please respond on a remedial level for me. TIA

Try downloading the pcl5e driver for your printer from HP and then change to that driver from your printer properties/advanced/new driver tab. To get to your printers properties goto printers and faxes and right click on your printer.
I have done this and I have much better performance with pdf files on my HP 1320TN. I switch back for all other formats.
I hope this helps. I originally got this tip from PAW. Thanks again Paul.

Is there anyway to know before you start printing that it will need to use the pcl5e driver?

I don't know of an easy way so now I always use the pcl5e driver for pdf files. It is not that difficult or time consuming to change.

Instead of switching drivers, why not install a "new" printer with the PCL5e driver. I actually have three logical printers for each physical one on my system. For example, the HP Laserjet 1300 shows up in my printer list as:
hp Laserjet 1300 PCL 6 hp Laserjet 1300 PCL 5e hp Laserjet 1300 - PS
These are all the same physical printer, and use the same printer port, but when the printer is selected, the proper driver is used.

I think the problem is when the documents are scanned images into a pdf file. As I understand it, you need to try doing a search within the document, if you can not do a search then it is a scanned image and you will need to use the pcl5 file. Hope this helps.

I believe John is correct. I've just found it faster to change the driver rather than search and then probably change the driver anyway.
This is just what works for me.

Something VERY simple that has always worked for me is........... Uninstall Printer, Reboot computer, it will tell you new hardware found, choose drivers and install. (If drivers for your printer are not found, put your CD that came with printer in, choose it for Driver location and Install.)

Re: printing pdf files using HP 1320
For files that were scanned, you might also try downloading/using pcl postcript. I also have pcl 5e and pcl 6, and each performs well under certain conditions with my 1320. What I usually do once a doc is opened is I'll select a driver (I usually try pcl 5e first) and print out the first 20 pages. If that goes lightning fast, then I know I have the right driver for the job. If it goes slow, then the next 20 is attempted using pcl 6, and so forth until I match the correct driver with documents. Usually hit paydirt with 1st or 2nd choice of driver. Good luck!

No such luck for me... I've downloaded PCL5, now what do I do? How do I choose a driver? It's printing 1 page every 10 minutes! HELP. Thanks all.

Re: printing pdf files using HP 1320
The correct driver and installation program is on the Installation CD that came with the printer. Click on the "Add Printer" icon and when asked if you have a CD, click that you do.
Or follow these instructions -> http://tinyurl.com/kk8dt

I think I might need more memory. I have 16mb.

Re: printing pdf files using HP 1320
Jessi, Hi, forget about that-- if your printer is already installed. the language emulation is there - it was put there when you installed the first time. and it is automatic meaning it switches automatically to whatever you need pcl5 or pcl6 at the time of printing. go to a professional printer repair place and get u some ram. beef ur up!!!!! then u will have no more problems. 32 megs would be ok but why not go higher ----16 megs is just not enough. good luck btw - you should try to get a copy of your installation cd for the future - you never know when u might need it.

Re: printing pdf files using HP 1320
I'm sorry, "asigner", but I completely disagree. The printer will not automatically switch drivers, and they are not automatically installed. The user, when printing, must select the printer. The selected printer has a (as in one) driver associated with it. You computer, nor the printer, knows what driver is need or wanted, except in some cases PostScript based applications such as PageMaker.
And 16Mb of printer should print anything that can be displayed on your screen with Adobe Reader. However, it may take a long time to render a TIF image page in PDF, but it should still print. If there's not enough printer RAM, the PC's memory, virtual/paging memory and spool files will be used and may grow to a very large size while generating the image on the PC.

I've misplaced the installation cd. Do I need it to "add a printer"?? Thanks Paul for your help. I've never had a problem with PDF files, until now. This file, I think, is way too big! I managed to get 1 set printed, but I had to put the BO's copy on a cd.

Re: printing pdf files using HP 1320
Yes, you should really use the CD unless you are technical enough to create and link logical printer ports that meet HP requirements. You can order a replacement CD from HP (http://tinyurl.com/ltk6e) if necessary. Or ask someone who has the same model to burn you a copy of their CD.
