ATM email re: BGC

I haven't worked for them a lot, maybe a couple times months ago. They sent me an email regarding getting a BGC. However, they are willing to pay for it and it would be seen on a need to know basis. It will check for criminal records in the last 7 years only. I'm wondering if it's even worth it as I don't work for them. What do you think?

Never worked for them but I got it too...my problem

is they are "checking specifically for Federal felony convictions" for 7 years and then the other 2 pages tells us all about our rights under the FCRA and how to repair any misinformation. I don't want them running a credit report, that isn't a part of a federal felony conviction. Another SA that I know wound up with a Title Company running a check on her 6 times in 2 years.

This is what we would HOPE to see!

They're not charging you for this, they're not requiring mandatory membership in any organization you may/may not wish to belong to - what is there to not like about this?

Re: This is what we would HOPE to see!

Like Sue, my problem, is that it looks like they'll be checking my credit report too, even though it says only federal criminal history. That they're willing to pay for it is great, but could you imagine every single company checking our credit? I'd be done to 500 in no time and I have a good credit rating. I tried to call to ask about this but their lines were busy.

Re: Credit Checks

I agree - I got the ATM fax and I thought it sounded great until I realized they would be checking my credit. My credit is good and I want my score to stay that way - I don't want all these different companies running a credit check periodically whenever they want to. Many companies doing that only a couple times a year would wreak havoc on anyone's score!

Renee, what is there

Renee -- what is there TO like?
I think everyone should look at the WHOLE picture here (some have) but, there is
much more to this than people realize. It will indeed have ramifications.

Re: Mia I'm with you on this, I have nothing to hide and

I'm an open book. However this is an invasion into my privacy and yes having your credit scores go down, for who and for what? I do occasionally work for ATM, when I first started as a notary I did quite a bit for them, now when they call they either accept the fee I'm requesting or they don't. If they are desperate they call back and say ok, otherwise they have found a notary to do the job for less money. Let them hire the notary for less money.
The few times I now work for them in a year's time, is not worth my privacy. I'm just a little more particular as to who I give my personal information to and who I allow to probe through my personal information...... I do still believe when push comes to shove and they want that signing done, can't find anyone else to do it......they will be calling whether you have a BGC on file with them or not.
Please consider some of the LO's we do deal with......... I think it is more then obvious we have some major creeps in this business, notaries as well as signing services and LO's....... and I'm sorry but I'll take my losses at my own choosing....my phone rings with work daily. For those signing services that are fair, pay timely have respect for the notaries, and I have respect for, I will bend over.......... Now ATM does pay timely and I have never had an issue with them but know your place, we are a dime a dozen in their books and I simply will not comply with their demands. I trust everyone in their corp........ has also been through this BGC, I seriously doubt it....... Who cares if they are paying for it, it's not the cost in my mind, it is about so much more.....

CBC and credit checks are separate issues

First off - I did not receive the e-mail myself, but Cassie made note that it was for a criminal background check, no mention at all of credit check.

As for the whole picture - it's my belief that CBC's will be coming down the pike, it just makes too much sense and that part's been belabored plenty here. It is also my belief that obtaining a CBC and joining any type of organization should be completely separate choices provided to me. This provides me that choice. Sign me up.

A criminal background check, or CBC, doesn't assume a credit check. Separate issue - but one that is already being considered. Wish I could remember where, but no time to check right now - read that the bureau's are considering a means of enabling credit checks (for non-credit purposes, such as this) that WILL NOT affect scoring and WILL NOT show as "inquiries". Before I would submit to credit checks, THAT will have to be a done deal - as again, it's an entirely separate issue.

You're right, I didn't mention it in my original post

I meant to. That's my big concern, honestly. I don't want everybody and their mother checking my credit. That they're willing to pay for it is great, but if that's all they check.

Nation's direct is backpeddling, LOL

I don't work for them, but I must be in their database:

Dear Valued Agent,

Recently, we sent an email to you about the Gramm Leach Bliley Act (GLBA). An act intended to protect consumer's personal and private information.

Recently the NNA with backing from several of the nations largest title insurance underwriters announced a GLBA certification program for signing agents.

Our previous email stated that this was a "requirement" as of December 1, 2006. To properly word this statement it needs to be revised to say that the GLBA certification program will be a "requirement" for some of our client base as of December 1, 2006. In other words, we will have a portion of our business within Nations Direct that will only be available to those signing agents that are GLBA compliant.

In the upcoming days, we will give you as much information as we can on this subject.

No question about that

I won't be doing any BGC for Nations Direct. At least they finally stopped calling me.

I've worked for them. Got the fax too. They pay slow but check never bounces.
Here's my problem with this... In California we ALWAYS have to go through a BGC in order to get our credentials. We are agents of the state of California. As such it is redundant to invade OUR privacy for a company to satisfy their customers so they can look good. I am HANDS DOWN NO on this proposal and will respond to them accordingly.
