FBI background checks
Since there is so much conflicting information regarding background checks, I called my local FBI office to inquire about all of this. (I've seen several different addresses and compliancies on this). Here is what I was told: Go to your local police department and get a set of fingerprints done. (Nope.. you can't choose your color! ) Write a letter for the reason WHY you want an FBI Clearance done. Include your name, address, DOB, gender & SS#. Include a MONEY ORDER or Certified check (no personal checks) for $18.00 made out to the U.S. Treasury. Send to: FBI-CJIS 1000 Custer Hollow Rd Clarksburg, WV 26306 Allow 3-4 weeks.
As independents, the report comes back to US for US to send to who we want to. PLUS.. NO CREDIT CHECK.

That sounds like a very good idea but what is the opinion of the majority do you all think this could possibly be the answer for almost all of us? I am going to try this I think. Thanks for the info PJM/MI

It would be foolish to rely on a copy of background check results provided by the person who is being checked. The results should go from the checking agency to the person relying on the check without being touched by the person being checked.

I had a background check done for our local school district for employmnet purposes. I received a copy and so far everyone who has requested one has accepted it.

I recently had a BGC done by one of the companies that the NNA says it does BGC for. The Checking entity sent it to me and I forwarded it to the company. It says it is not transferable.
Now that being said. Another local notary and I had our fingerprints taken and we are doing the FBI back ground check. We are going to certify copies of the original results for each other. We will let you know how that works out.

Certifing copies can't be done here in Wyoming. Non-transfrable doesn't mean you can't share the results with anyone you choose.

Re: FBI background checks- Texas can certify copies
of original documents as long as they are not recordable....I think it's possible that it might just work.

Re: FBI background checks- Texas can certify copies
If a trusted "other" notary has the original....and the state provides the wording for the certification. Why not?

Are you allowed to certify copies in WI? Also, is there a state-approved form to use for certifying a copy? If not, you may be drifting over the line into UPL.
Here in NY, the only one who can issue a certified copy of a document is the custodian of the original document - which makes sense because, well, the custodian actually HAS the original document. The results you get from the FBI on a background check are not the original - that resides with the FBI, and my guess is they're probably the only ones who can truly issue a certified copy.
The whole idea of someone asking me to provide the results of my own background check just seems a bit bizarre to me; how do they know what I'm giving them is real? It sort of defeats the purpose of doing it in the first place, doesn't it?
I know many are opposed (and some vehemently so) to what the NNA is doing , but the CONCEPT is a good one - establish a central location where vendors can check to see whether potential independent contractors have passed a BGC. I hope that if NotRot decides to go forward with a certification process, they will follow the same basic model - establish criteria, show vendors what the criteria are, and list the names of those who have met the criteria.
Of course, for those vendors who actually ask YOU to send them a copy of your background check, there's always Microsoft Word and a little creative writing....
