Got an email from a company re: GLBA
Dear Notary Signing Agent: In Compliance with the GLBA Act, Axxxxxxx Sxxx Uxx is now conducting background screening. Pursuant to the GLBA Act, Lenders and Title Companies are looking for notaries to pass the screening test. This compliance is to assure protection of the Borrower’s financial information within the loan documents. We will only allow “passed” NSA’s into our Database of Notary Signing Agents. It is of most importance to comply with this screening in a timely manner in order to be listed on our directory and called for signings. Please try to respond by November 29, 2006, either through our website, the NNA or other associations offering this screening.
Nobody likes the Government telling us what to do. However, speedy compliance by all notaries nationwide will send a message to Washington that we are very serious about maintaining standards of excellence and professionalism. Also, voluntary screening will show our industry as a whole is dedicated to the highest level of ethics and is thereby “self-regulated.” This may preclude future regulatory intervention by virtue of the fact that unethical, dishonest or illegal activity will not be tolerated in our industry. Government is counting on us to be diligent on this matter.
If you have passed the NNA Screening, just reply with “passed” and we will check your records on the NNA, otherwise please follow the instructions below.
SCREENING PROCEDURES:
We have created a background screen questionnaire in the attachment. Please complete and return with the credit card authorization for processing your background check in the amount of $23.00. All notaries that have passed will automatically get listed on our notary directory with the notation of your “passed GLBA Screening status” AS “Background ck passed” and called for notary signings. In addition to your screening we will be sending out notification letters to hundreds of lenders and title companies nationwide will be notified. Finally, due to your adherence to this act and our proactive role, your exposure will be increased. These lenders and title companies will in turn be contacting us or calling you from our National Notary Directory seeking screened notaries. Please order your screening today.
Please allow 7 days for processing and we will notify you by e-mail. Thank you for complying with the GLBA Act. After completion, your name will be listed in our Preferred Status.
Thing is I've never received a lick of work from these people, does that mean I will get work from them as a "preferred NSA?" I doubt it, they would probably only pay $50.00 anyway. And aside from all that a BGC is not a requirement of the GLBA Act.

Any requests for bgc from TC's or lenders?
So far I have only heard about bgc's from SSs.
I could care less about what SSs want.

No, as a matter of fact
I received docs the other night from a lender's secured site. It was in compliance with the GLBA Act as they put it. So if a lender chooses this to comply with the GLBA what makes the NNA or podunk SS's think they have a better handle on it? Me thinks there's a rotten fish in Denmark me boy! Well, maybe not in Denmark but certainly where the NNA shines!

And did you reply with "passed" or did you reply at all?
I got an e-mail a couple weeks ago very similar to yours - told me if I'd done the NNA BGC to reply with "passed" and they'd check that site (which they could have done without e-mailing me) - when I replied - twice - it was returned both times by MailerDaemon as undeliverable
Come to find out, it was from a company I contacted back when I first started and never signed with because they charged a fee. So I guess I'm in their database somewhere.

Re: I'm about to reply and tell them to bleep bleep!
If the SS`S / title companys want background checks let them pay for them as other compaines do. The whole thing sounds like another attempt at a money grab, with the Notary`s bearing the brunt. Don`t go for it. We need to stand together. We need to require background checks ( of course at their expense) on the SS`S/ title companys, to see what their record is with payment and fraud. If this was required I am sure it would eliminate a number of them. Also you must be certified for 150.00 to get a background check done and this is the only one they will accept? I wounder who came up with that Idea?

I replied to them stating that I have never gotten any work from them and that California notaries already have to pass a Department of Justice background check in order to get a commission. They gave me the following reply and I quote --------
"Ok, thank you for your timely response. We are providing a service for notaries that have passed
So that notaries like your self will be able to use our website for an additional
reference for lenders and title companies to access, if they need to check your status.
I will set you up on our Directory noting your “passed status” for $12.00 (yr. listing)
* Click on notary directory on our website, then fee schedule and pick your plan, then * Click on the green button to sign up at bottom * In the box on the form type “9.00 and passed” and send. * Then login in and edit your listing, pick your counties and state.
Thank you for allowing us to be of service. "
Yeah, right .....

I got the same response when I told them that...
in CA we are already screened by the DOJ, and they still want my 12.00 for the privilieage to be in their database. The guts of some people.

It's just a marketing pitch ----
---- from www.accuratesignups.com to get Notary's to purchase they're $12.00/yr --- or more--- services. I figure they got my email address from one of the legit sites as I have never signed up with them. However, they are only charging $23.00 for the background check rather than the $39.00 that NNA is charging, IF the BC is legit. I don't know & am inclined to distrust a fishing email such as this. Or is that phishing?
