How long would you wait for ID?

No, this isn't a rhetorical question! And yes, I did inform the borrowers that they needed two forms of ID (and what forms would be acceptible) during my confirmation telephone call.

At a recent signing Mr. Borrrower had his driver's license and other ID on the table when I walked in. Mr. Borrower told Mrs. Borrower that she needed to get her driver's license for me. She search and searched her purse, bureau, car, et cetera, and could not find it. Mr. Borrower was unhappy. I made sure (politely but firmly) that they both knew that nothing could be done without her ID. It didn't matter to her. Approximately 1/2 hour after sitting down at the table, I called the signing service (who said, without hesitation, "Of course you can't do anything!"Wink, then the title company. After I'd put my journal and everything else away and stood up to leave, Mrs. Borrower suddenly found her license.

My suspicious nature thinks it was a game on Mrs. Borrower's part. Mr. Borrower wasn't laughing and neither was I.

How long would you give a borrower to produce valid ID before you called your contact(s) to say that the borrower could not produce ID and that you were leaving?

Ahhh the old Fitzhugh Dodson Soggy Potato Chip theory that negative attention is better than none at all!
I actually had that happen to me except that the woman was really upset that she couldn't find it. So upset that she overlooked it at least twice by my count. It was in with the mail. I saw her look in that pile twice! She normally kept it in her car and brought it in knowing I would need it.

many people keep their driver's license and WALLETS in their cars.

YES!!

Me, too! I never leave my purse in the car, nevermind my wallet! Also, I can't believe how many people don't sign their credit cards (I do mention that if it fell into the wrong hands, the criminal could just sign the back & the signature would match & not be questioned at the register) or how many carry their SS card in their wallet!!

Probably as long as I'd wait if I got to the house and the client wasn't home - 20-30 minutes tops since they knew ahead of time you needed the ID - I think that's being generous.

15 minutes and I would have left. That's plenty of time to

Search for the id and come to the conclusion that it's not going to be found very easily.

if they're not there when you arrive?

Re: Ananotary - how long do you wait for the borrowers

That is a different scenario. If the borrowers are there and because of their own fault (no ID) I am twiddling my thumbs for fifteen minutes and they still can't fine their ID then I"m done. Running late for the appointment or something similar is different. If they can't find their id in 15 minutes, which to me is an awfully long time to be looking for something that should be in your wallet, I"m done. I would NEVER sit at someones table for 30 minutes and just wait. By that point I should already be almost done with the signing.

Re: Ananotary - how long do you wait for the borrowers

Some companies tell you to wait 30 minutes. Don't do it. Call when you get there in case door bell doesn't work, borrowers are in the cellar, etc. After 10 minutes, call again with the message that you are leaving and they should call LO to reschedule or if they arrive within 10 minutes to call you and you'll return. That way if they call (and I have NEVER had someone call within that 10 minutes) you turn around and it's still within the 'required' 30 minutes. Otherwise, you've not wasted 20 minutes in a driveway waiting for someone who's probably not going to show.
