I need to know the Req'd specs for a printer, are they

PCL 6 compliant, at least 16 MB and is 1200X1200 DPI too high? I am looking at the HP LJ 1320 but in doing a search, some have said there isnt enough built in memory for our loan packages to print quick, is that right? I am not real computer/printer savvy so if anyone is kind enough to advise, please respond in non "techi" lingo, tia!

Yes it does. You can refill the toner on the 1320. I have this printer and love it. I did upgrade the memory to the max of 128 mb (if I remember right). Type in memory for you to find the website. I bought it for about $40. Very easy to install also.

'Morning, Kathy. I used an HP1320 for a few years

and loved it, except for *some* PDF (those are the Adobe) files. Sometimes a loan package would print lickity split just fine, and others, it took 18 seconds per page...print, think, print, think...drove me nuts. I'd change the setting to spool first, then print; then to print directly...it didn't seem to matter. Some packages would print, some would take forever. Computer guy said to get more memory, which I did. Didn't seem to make mujch difference. The PL6 thing mattered when printing directly from, say, DynamicDox or ELynx (sp?), or SwiftView - anyway, directly from a doc delivery site. Then it worked fine. It was when docs were emailed to me in PDF format that the printer chose to be fast or slow. Never did figure this out. I also have a little HP 1012, which is not PL6 compliant, so I used it for the slow Adobe files and zippo, worked like a champ. One I had letter, one legal, and printed docs from the two of them.

The toner cartridges for both can be refilled 4-5 times or until something breaks, which I do, and never had a problem.

I finally broke down and got Big Mamma, the HP 2430, which has a dual tray and prints letter or legal, depending on the size of the paper in the Adobe (PDF) file. It's nice. As for the old problem of emailed PDF packages, it still doesn't treat all PDF files equally, (isn't as fast for *some* of the emailed packages,) but hardly noticeable. It holds a lot pf paper, both sizes, and is a pretty good machine. Occasionally, gets hung-up on some pages, but I think that may be due to the original scanning, don't really know. Haven't tried to refill cartridge, but getting close. If the cartridges can't be refilled, I'm going to have a cow.

I know this wasn't much help, and the slow printing of only some of the Adobe files is still a mystery, since upgrading the memory on the 1320 didn't seem to matter. I'm convinced it's a spoolie thing, or dependent upon how the docs were scanned, but who knows? My production has improved with Big Mamma for sure.

All the best,
Susie

Slow PDFs versus fast PDFs

Somebody here must be able to explain why some PDF files are just plain slow to print while other files go quickly. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with printer settings, 'cause I've printed a fast one and then a slow one (and vice versa) back to back....

Exactly! I thought it might be that the slow ones were

sent in a graphics format, but computer guy said no. (sounded like a good explanation to me...) More memory didn't help. I still say it's got to do with how they are sent, or how they are scanned, or something from the originating source. Bad document generator! Bad, Bad!

PCL5e driver

If you do a search you will find that this has been addressed several times.
Having said that I have the 1320TN and had the same problem. I also upgraded the memory and that helps for general printing but not the Adobe pdf problem.
I downloaded and installed the PCL5e driver and I use that for all pdf files with no problems.
I think I remember reading that for some pdf files the postscript driver is faster but I don't bother to switch as the PCL5e is fast enough.
What I have done is install the printer 3 times each time with a different driver. Now I have: a PCL6, a PCL5e and a PS printer that I can select from the print window.

Thanks to all who responded. Most of the files I get are PDF

so, this makes me a little hesitant to purchase this unit. I have been using a Konica Minolta Pagepro 1350 for 3 years and have never had a problem printing anything and it is only a PCL5. I like this machine but it is totally worn out. Any more advice greatly appreciated!

Re: PCL5e driver

What Dave said and set the dpi as low as it will go...think that's 300dpi. Print quality is not affected, but it sure goes faster.

Re: Exactly! I thought it might be that the slow ones were

Speaking of PDF I had something a few weeks back. I started to print the package and they were printing lickety split, then I noticed that all the docs were on landscape instead of portrait, I hadn't paid attention before hitting the print button. So I went back into the file and rotated everything to portrait, hit the print button and it took forever and a day to print. I printed a package the other night from a secure site and it came out fast as can be. So I agree, it has to be the way they are being scanned.

Re: Slow PDFs versus fast PDFs

You've been getting by just fine, but to print slow is one of those time it means your equipment can't handle 100% of the jobs required for this business.

Re: 'Morning, Kathy. I used an HP1320 for a few years

I too experienced the problem with slow pdf printing. The problem, fortunately, was not in your use of HP 1320 printers, which I have 2 of these printers. What I have discovered is that often times part of the package is scanned into pdf format at too high a resolution, like resolution that should be used for photographs!...I discovered this by realizing the loan docs print quickly while the separate pdf that contains the HUD and AFF's print painstakingly slow. And this pdf file has to be scanned in by someone that obviously doesn't understand scanner settings or just is unfamiliar with the use of their office scanner....I hope this resolves your issue.

Re: And the 1320 knows the difference between legal and letter?

Yes it does it you have the 1320 tn and set it up correctly. I have one and I'm happy with it as long as docs are scanned in correctly as Alex has stated.
