Jail notarization
I had a last minute call last night for a POA notarization at county jail. The requestor was the inmates CPA and when we worked out the details; drive north in 6 oclock holiday traffic for 45 miles, arrive at an exact time, pass through security to gain personal access to to the signer, wait for as long as it takes to get the signer down from the cell where she was being held ect., ect., ect. When I finally got in front of the signer she asked me my fee and then proceeded to tell me that a notaries fee was $50 and no more. She said she should know because she was a notary! Well this was not the time to negotioate fees and I wasn't going to with an accused felon. She signed it at the shouted suggestion of the Deputy.

I'm with ya Joe. I have only done 1 request @ the local jail (at the request of the incarcerated persons family) Our local jail has a notary employed. I tell ya...... It made me VERY uncomfortable and I don't know that I would return.

Joe
I did one that was a court order for her to sign a quit claim deed. Started out great but she got a little worked up and the last I saw of her she was being dragged back to her cell. She didn't sign. That was one nasty divorce!

I did a loan signing for a correctional officer. He proceeded to tell me he was going to get his notary commission so he could do notarizations at the prison. He then proceeded to tell me that one of the other correctional officer charges $40.00 to $50.00, she makes quite a bit of money doing several of these a day. I let him know that all we are allowed to charge is $10.00 per signature, to charge more is illegal. If you are already there working, you can't charge a travel fee. He had the strangest look on his face. Then he said to me, maybe that is why she is no longer working there. He then said maybe he wouldn't do this as it would not be profitable.

Thanks for doing that Joe - I referred that job to you, and thank you for referring the adoption job(s) to me
See folks, networking works! Even though Joe and I service the same area we will refer jobs to each other when need be. It's called having a good business relationship with your competition.
