My first real ID issue in years
I go to the borrowers house on Friday with a giant set of docs, for a company that I've never worked with before. I ask for ID's. I see that Mrs. Borrower's ID has a totally different name on it than the docs. Docs are drawn as Renata Soprano f/k/a Renata Garbonzo, but the ID says Renata Palucci. She tells me that everyone knows her as Renata Palucci, that was her previous married name, and because of kids she kept it for 25 years after the divorce, maiden name was Garbonzo and new married name is Soprano. I explain that I need ID as Soprano to notarize docs, she gets upset, as TC said there would not be a problem. I call TC and explain, and the girl on the phone says "what do you mean their ID has to match the name they sign with? Use her marriage license to make the connection." I explain that I can't as she has 3 names, and even the marriage license has her maiden name, not the one on her current id.
Turns out that the lender and TC had the documents as the name on her license, but Mr. Borrower said he wouldn't sign any papers where she wasn't using her current last name. The TC and lender knew what was on her DL and didn't tell her to get it changed. That Friday was Veteran's Day so DMV was closed, they go Monday morning and DMV tells them there is a new procedure in place, where you go to the SS office first and change your SS card, then in 48 hours you go back to DMV and they can change your name in the system (makes it hard for those people that can just take 1 day off to get all that stuff done).
I never did the closing, the TC called someone that would notarize without the proper ID.

Verbally Verify ID B4 Printing!!!
My first course of action is to ask the borrower (when confirming appt. & location), do they have ID to match the documents. I always prefer to verbally verify ID B4 printing.
JMHO!

Re: Verbally Verify ID B4 Printing!!!
I normally do, but got docs at 10pm for an 8am closing. Too late to call the night before and too early to call before I got there. Good thing they were close by, out here in the sticks near me.

I would have called them up at 7:30AM. They most likely were up waiting 4 U.

I recently had one that was a 2nd marriage for both. The hubby really hated the F/K/A part for her. Apparently she had a bad divorce and they bought this house before they got married.

I ask BO's what is on the ID when confirming appointment. What ID will you be using on Monday? How is your name listed on your ID?
I get stuck every now and again, someone 'forgets' that they have a II after their name or a Jr. or Sr. and I get "Oh, that matters?".
I think we all try to cover our a##es before we get there, but we've all gotten stuck.

I had an ID issue last night. Mrs. has 2 middle names. I called and specifically asked if her ID had the second middle name on it as I didn't want any surprises when I got there. Her husband said yes. I should have asked her. It wasn't on the ID, had to wait 30 minutes while she looked for her passport, she was not happy. She said that she wished I would've told her before. I let her know that I did ask her husband. She gave him a look and calmed down. They turned out to be very nice people. She is just sensitive about her middle names. The State of WI only allows for one and wouldn't let her put 2. We also had to correct the husband's middle initial on all paperwork because they had put H instead of E. Took a really long time, but what can you do?

I had a similar situation last night with Mr. Borrower "James" whereby on all the doc's his legal name was listed but ALL of his ID it showed the aka name "Jimmy", even his SS card had Jimmy. Yes, I did remind the borrowers when I called for confirmation that they needed ID to reflect name on doc's (hadn't reviewed doc's yet because they were overnighted) an on all of her fax communication with Lender they used the AKA name so she never question the use of Jimmy's name.
Both Mr. and Mrs. initial comment was... we've never had this issue when notarizing documents, but come to find out... they new the notary.
Fortunately we were able to get 2 credible witnesses to identify him and were able to complete the signing... but what started out being a simple signing took 2 hrs to complete.

Had another one this morning
and I did ask her if her ID had her as Billie Fowler Johnson, she said yes. Get there and her DL and military ID have Billie Jo Johnson. Fowler was her maiden name 50 years ago. UGH. Crossed out Fowler on all the notarized docs, and did the closing.

I agree that giving out the borrowers' real names is not a good idea. However, the more I am in this type of business...the more I realize that when you get a loan it's public record. It's all right there for everyone one to see who is looking to find out about you.
Of course, if you are a natural person you can strike any ID numbers. How comforting!
My guess is that after 38 years in the title / legal business NCLisa buttons the lid on what needs to be buttoned.

While I agree that the loans are public record, I also believe as a professional courtesy that it is not proper to be using borrower(s) actual name(s) in message forums--no different than my journal which contains private information and not for the eyes of any other borrower.

Carolyn, I don't disagrees with you on that--you are absolutely correct. Really, it cannot be said enough.
I just wanted a good reason to give NCLisa the business by insinuating she was old enough to work in Title for 38 years. **My guess is that after 38 years in the title / legal business NCLisa buttons the lid on what needs to be buttoned.**
And, I don't think someone with her qualifications would give out real names. But, that's just my opinion.
