OT: "Dexter" on Showtime
I never thought I'd see the day that I'd look forward to a TV show that had a monster as the hero. That's what I've found in "Dexter" on Showtime.
Several people at work mentioned that they couldn't wait until Sunday nite to see what the new Dexter had in store... and the "Ice Truck Killer". I thought they were just cable TV addicts and dismissed it. Then my boss, who I like alot, asked me if I watched Dexter. I said no, I watched "Desperate Housewives" on Sunday night. Haha.
He told me that it was a story about a guy (Dexter) that made up for the failings of the legal system...the criminals who got off due to tiny infractions of the law. He said Dexter fixed it. Well, being the conservative person I am, it sounded pretty good to me (fixing the problems of the legal system) so I ordered Showtime two weeks ago.
What my boss didn't tell me was that Dexter was a seriously flawed human being, quite evil actually - that he was a serial killer himself. His only redeeming quality was that his foster father (a cop) recognized when Dexter was a young boy that he was lacking in normal human emotion as a result of his childhood, and did his best to channel his son's horrible personality to something that might actually serve the world - to kill only those who deserved it. Dexter had his Dad's 'permission' to kill...if and only if he had proven to himself that the victim was guilty - and to be sure of it.
I'm still trying to figure out why I like this bizarre show so much and look forward to it. He's a hero, yet he's a monster. He does "good" (killing evil people) yet he does it without answering to anyone (not good) and in a particularly heinous and calculating way.
Actually it sort of bothers me that I like the show. Anybody else watch it? Anybody else wondering why they like it?

I suspect that the show recognizes that the evil in
life today is not properly taken care of by our justice system which frequently allows evil people to escape justice by manipulation of the language of the law. I can understand the desire to have an ultimate justice that actually takes care of the problems that may escape a judicial system based on a legal system that is easily manipulated. I suspect that this show will have a huge following since in this show the justice is actually meted out to those who deserve it in an equivalent measure! it shouldn't bother you, is should indicate that you believe that the current system of justice falls short of meting out appropriate justice!

Re: JJ I watched that the other night and I liked it,
I remember reading about it and watching some of the previews on SHO and thought it was an interesting concept. A serial killer that wacks the guilty and protects the innocent? Talk about an interesting story. And Julie (formerly Darla on ANGEL) Benz is great too!

Yes, but who needs a judge, jury and executioner all rolled into one?

No one John but its fantasy that will probably sell well!
I'm hardly condoning it and my comment is out of context. I was merely remarking that it was a concept people could fantasize about and therefore enjoy the show. It obviously can't be reality; its impossible to allow this sort of thing to go on in society, it ranks right up there with the benevolent dictator theory. However I find it interesting as a story concept! I haven't seen it and have no intention of seeing it but then there are plenty of shows I don't watch: Close to Home and Ghost Whisperer are a couple that come to ming immediately. Those shows don't interest me I'd rather watch the food network!

My hubby and I both love the show and look forward to it every week. I like different! You never thought that you would root for the bad/good guy. I also like Weeds- once again, not the same old TV - god bless cable!

Reminds me of "Death Wish" with Charles Bronson, a series of movies that started in the 70s. My friends and I rooted for Charlie as he became a practiced vigillante following the killing of his wife and savaging of his daughter. And we also were uncomfortable that we were rooting for him, trying to justify the need for what he was doing. I still am uncomfortable with that dichotomy.
Everything old is new again. . .

Gangs of New York kinda ruined Scorsese for me but I do want to see The Departed. What about DeNiro and Pacino in a comedy? DeNiro can pull it off, Pacino I'm sure he can because he was so crazy as John Milton in Devil's Advocate.

House
That is the quirky show I'm liking right now. I can only seem to catch reruns though on USA.
