OT - (maybe not) IE7 vs Firefox 2
I'm thinking of switching over to Firefox 2 from IE7. Just need some reassurance that I won't have any problems running the software that I currently use, ie, Quickbooks, excel, etc, etc. Not to mention our typical doc printing software. TIA

Re: The pups' are being pesty! Morning T-dog, John...
At Paul's (PAW) suggestion I downloaded Firefox 2 yesterday. It runs much faster than IE (I don't have 7 yet) and seems to be a cleaner operating system. I browsed heavily yesterday and didn't run into any problems yet. I have not tried it with any other programs yet. The User Interface is intuitive and it has a lot of features that are add-ons in IE.

Thanks Charles....
I just tried it, and am undecided about it. I have IE 7 which has been working well. I like the tabs on it, I couldn't find the tabs on Firefox. Speed doesn't seem to be an issue with either browser. Also, my Norton Password manager will not work with Firefox. Think I'll probably stay with IE 7.

IE7. I just got on to a webpage - salesgenie.com (you may be interested if you don't already know this site) and the formatting was scrambled and it was very annoying!

John ... Tab controls are set in Tools -> Options -> Tabs
Charles ... I still keep IE around because some sites require it (ActiveX and such). With Firefox, there is an extension (IE View @ http://ieview.mozdev.org/) that allows you to switch to IE from any screen and also you can set certain URLs to always open with IE. Very handy feature for those sites which really require the use of IE to function properly. (Which, imo, is a poorly designed site if it can only be viewed with one browser. And, many also require other MSIE unique features to run.)

Just went to the salesgenie page and it looks exactly the same in Firefox as it does in IE. Maybe you have some settings set in Firefox causing a video display problem. (Just a guess.)

Thanks Paul, I'll have to look into it. I agree on the...
websites, they should be designed to be universally readable. On salesgenie I don't know if they use frames but some of the text superposed on the graphics and made it very difficult to read. I like the idea of being able to swithch between different views, I'll have to research that.

I've been using Firefox for about a year now and I love it, love it, love it.
The only time I run into problems with downloading docs is when the docs are Swiftview and another one (I can't remeber which one, though). If I am having an issue with docs, I simply open in IE.
Give it a shot...It's easy to load and will even save and transfer you IE bookmarks.

There is a version of Swiftview that works cleanly with Firefox - it's the version for Mozilla. It installs as a Firefox extension; the only problem I had installing it was that it would complete and then want to install itself again. I just closed the installer and restarted Firefox, and everything was fine.

dickb/wi ~ I just found that out, some of my RE sites just
don't display correctly as well as some of my mortgage broker stuff so Ia'm goign to keep both on for a while and see if Firefox is worth using. someone mentioned that IE7 looks kind of like Firefox and I can see the resemblance. I'll probably continue to use IE7 because I really have no use for two browsers.

One major reason NOT to use IE ...
It is the target of hackers, data miners and out-n-out thieves. MS is known for numerous security leaks and hacks because of it's popularity. Firefox, at least for now, doesn't 'enjoy' that dubious distinction. As its popularity grows, I'm sure that the security penetrations will also increase, but for now, it works as good as IE in most cases and in some, actually better. (This is compared to IE6 not 7.)

Go for the Firefox. It is a stand-alone program. It's a spin off of Mozilla and I've been using different versions for 15 years. Very stable, updates itself an doesn't interfere with anything else on your system. I guarantee that you won't be sorry. I haven't opened IE in years except when you get a site that requires it and thats not very often. I also use Thunderbrid for my email another Mozilla spin-off and it is also extremely stable. Keep in mind that Virus writers pick on MIcrosoft. The gurus use Firefox and Thunderbird. TRy them both you won't be sorry.

Re: OT - (maybe not) IE7 vs Firefox 2 I remember Mozilla
and one of the first e-mail programs: Eudora. I remember getting those as soon as I was able to get an ISP, that was after having to dial in to get on the internet with my blazing (at that time) 9.5k modem. Those were the days. I guess kids think of us as dinosaurs now: heck I remeber the wall phone you used to have to crank to call on. Of course I lived in a very very rural place, they used dry cells to power the phone system.

Re: OT - (maybe not) IE7 vs Firefox 2 I remember Mozilla
Funny, I too remember the crank. My first phone number that I remember was "7". It's just that we were the seventh one in Swan Quarter to get a phone. The only place we could call was the General Store and talk to Mabel. (Yep, Mabel!! Not Ma Bell. )
I still use Eudora (http://www.eudora.com/). But, Qualcomm is giving in to open architecture as we speak.
- - - - - QUALCOMM has decided not to remain in the email market because it is not in alignment with the core business or strategic goals. By moving Eudora to an open source product, QUALCOMM can exit the Eudora business while still supporting Eudora users and advancing the Eudora e-mail client at a faster pace than before, through the power of the open source development community. - - - - -
The last commercial version of Eudora is on sale for $19.95. Sometime in early 2007, Eudora in concert with Firefox development, will release the open sourced version. Maybe, and only a guess on my part, the next version of Thunderbird will be a joint venture between Mozdev and Qualcomm. (Will it be called Thunder Dora? or Eu Bird?)
