Saw something new today
Driving home after nightfall in a rural area. Saw the reflector of an Amish Buggy going along the shoulder of the highway. Its a larger red triangle. All of a sudden some yellow lights start flashing right below it! Whan I passed it they also had white "headlights" placed low on the buggy so that they shown forward under the horse's feet! In talking with my freind about it. we realized I was in an area where someone in a car hit a buggy from behind, killing several members of the family in it. I gues some concessions are made in the community.

in Pa they used to require the Amish to have brake lights on their buggies and they had to flash. I had the misfortune of actually coming upon an accident after the fact but the buggy looked like kindling strewn around. They are not much of a match for cars and I undestand that there are usually few survivors.

We have a lot of pockets of Amish with the largest community being around 700. This is the first time I've seen this around here. I guess it's agood idea when you condider that you do seem to come up on them fast at night. Lots of 2 lane windy roads here.

That's the way Lancaster County is in Pa. Small towns, 2 lane roads and the buggys are dark (black) to begin with. Even with the reflective triangle and reasonable speeds they appear so fast in the turns.

I live near Lancaster and the buggies are VERY hard to see at night. Their flashing lights look like road work signs until you are upon them. I don't believe they need headlights. VERY dangerous but for some reason they are not required to carry insurance - I guess because they're not motorized. About 2 weeks ago a buggy was hit late at night, around midnight I think. Don't know if they survived or not.
