)
I have put my flame resistant suit on and have called the Fire Department to alert them to the possibilty of the requirement of their services. I also called the U S Forest Service about the possibility of forest fires all across the US.
I know I'm not alone in thinking the CBC is not required for Notaries, but don't depair! I have a solution to the problem! Do I think the solution will be adopted by said Notaries? NO!
Do not sign up for a CBC. Just say NO! If all Notaries said no, US commerce would not cease. Refis and new purchases would not come to a screeching halt. The only thing that would happen is...those companies telling us we have to get a CBC would suddenly realize they don't need one after all. You could liken the result as a mini American Revolution, and our refusal to consent to a CBC would be the Shot Heard 'Round the (Country)!
OK, have at it!

Mistarella, the search results must be coded with your login ID, when I click the link, it keeps asking that I enter a username/password when I'm already logged in.

Re: Background Checks
Actually, many notary signing agents are doing just what you recommended. They're hollering and screaming and stamping their feet and saying No Way and making a fuss. They're also contacting state and federal agencies and lawyers and consumer groups and making a big stink. They're talking with the companies at issue about other options. Other groups, like notaryrotary.com, are developing their own programs, such as a background check clearinghouse through which the companies can select the level of check they want performed and a list of providers.
And the word trickling down to us is that it's making a dent. Some companies are backing off the "mandatory requirement" wording and now saying it's "recommended" and "an option." They're offering more choices, like their in-house background checks for a fraction of the cost NNA is charging. They're more open to the idea of accepting other background checks as long as they have some reliable, cost-effective way of knowing who is doing those checks and what is in them.
It's not that they MUST HAVE background checks. It's that THEY must meet the requirements of GLBA, and they have chosen background checks as the means to fulfill THEIR requirements.
Keep doing what you're doing, folks. My personal opinion is that you on this board and the good people at notaryrotary.com are responsible for bringing about this shift.

Re: Background Checks Ok.... You got me......
I see this post from Marlene (with which I agree) but I don't understand the 2 posts above it. Rick's post takes me right to his profile, Misty's post takes me to the login page. Is something going on here?

Re: )Rick nice idea but people often do whatever they are
told without even questioning it. Look how the subject of BGC took on a life of it's own and dominated the board. I would not be surprised if a large number already have run to do this fearing they would be losing major bucks. I of course speak from a CA standpoint(since we are required to have BGC prior to commisson..... Seldom if ever do I follow just for the heck of it, I beat to my own drum 24-7....... which may not always be popular but it's how I choose to do things....
