one of those nights
Just got home from an assignment about 25 miles from home.....20 or so that are sparce country roads. Out of nowhere on the way home, a black dog runs accross my path. Now I DO know not to swerve to avoid animals and such in the road, so I didn't ... and did hit the dog. I swerved then!!! Wow, was I ever lucky that no-one was coming in the opposite direction! Managed to keep vehicle on the road and get back in my lane safely. I didn't stop to see how dog was, as it was VERY dark out there, and I just wanted the car to keep me safe. Got home to find my right front quarter-panel pretty well mangled up. Don't think tonight was very profitable....

Always, human life should be placed above animals and I'm glad you're okay. As for the accident, no one knows until they're at that split second whether or not they'd swerve, stop, hit the animal, etc. BUT it's afterwards that's my problem. You hit someone's pet and you didn't stop, didn't go to the nearest house, didn't call the police. In my book that's just not right.

You claim to have an MBA in Real Estate and Urban Planning. I know some schools have excellent concurrent degree programs in Business Administration and in Urban Planning but I have never heard of a school awarding an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) in anything other than Business Administration. The Anderson School of Business at UCLA offers degrees and awards concurrently an MBA and an MS in Urban Planning. Again you're proving yourself a total ass. In a post to a friend of mine, you screwed up because you thought that an MAI (Member Appraisal Institute) was an entry designation instead of the top designation the Appraisal Institute gives and then proceeded to tell this person how to give a commercial client a CMA (agents idea of value) when any commercial client is going to expect to have an appraisal for sale done. Then you proceeded to this person that you charge $500 an hour for consulting and would fit this person into your busy schedule if they needed your assistance. You are the type who you can't insult, too ignorant to know that that you are being insulted: just keep flapping your lips! You question MY IQ? ROFL

Hate to break this to you but brokers give CMA's that is compatitive market values to clients all the time. These do not replace appraisals and I never said they did. Come on now....as a dog lover, your dog wouldn't be out in the middle of nowhere running around close to midnight, now would it.
I love dogs and all animals, but don't put them before humans. This was a very desolate area....no houses to go to, for miles and miles. Plus, if I did find one and went to their door that late at night, I'd possibly get shot! I would have stopped, though, if the animal were down. It wasn't. I saw it running off, in my car mirrors. I couldn't have caught or picked up that animal by myself if I'd tried, so give it a rest.

BAck in the 70's I had a VW bug. Those things we famous for their lack of heat. I was driving in icy slushy weather and the windshield kept icing up. I was looking thru a small hole that was clear. Just as I went over them I saw a mother duck trying to gather her babies under her wings. I heard the clunk as I hit her and saw the babies flying thru the air out my rear window, which was of course, clear. I saw some babies run into some underbrush. I pulled over to try to find them and they were gone. The mother and 3 babies were dead. I felt horrible! I went home and called the police! They just laughed. Every tme I go by there I think of those ducks!

There is no way on earth out here in these little country roads that I would stop if I were alone. As a mother of 3 to care for I care more for my personal safety. I would go home and notify the authorities on a non-emergency phone number. I'm not a vet so there's really nothing I could do. I don't carry a gun so I couldn't put the dog out of its misery. Now this is not to say that I wouldn't be extremely upset about the dog. I would. Now if it were a deer I'd call home and tell hubby to bring the rifle and a blanket. The deer processor is just 20 minutes away and has a night drop. Plus I'd need a ride since hitting a deer can really result in a car that needs a tow.
Sandi you should report the incident to the authorities so they can write up a report. It may save you on your auto insurance deductable. Unfortunately it's too late for the animal but there's no reason you kids should have less groceries this month because a dog ran into the road.

I don't care if you are an animal lover or animal hater, it was your duty to call someone on your cell phone immediately when it happened. Carolyn that really depends on where you are and if you have
the appropriate number with you. You don't call 911 for a dog, that would be abuse to the 911 system and could keep another person from getting the immediate help that they need if they are put on hold for your call. If you don't have the number to animal control for the area you are in on you then you have to wait till you can stop in a safe area and get the number.

You have to dial 1-411 for information. I didn't even know that till a couple of weeks ago. I never would have thought the option would be different. Even with that option you can use your handsfree device and call. But a woman standing out alone on a country road is not a good idea.

Reply by SarahBeth_CA on 11/9/06 11:25am Msg #158427
No it's not just you
It's just different perspectives. One of the things I had to get used to was the large road kill count. In the city if there was a dog it was a pet or a stray, in the desert most likely a stray, and in the country dog road kill is actually rare. I would think of it in the same way whether it was someones pet or a stray. I hate it when an animal gets hit except maybe the skunks but then they stink even worse when they're hit. I would call the authoriries but remember if you feel compelled to get out of your car; when an animal gets hurt and scared they are more likely to bite. Calling someone that would provide the appropriate help for the animal is the best thing. That doesn't mean that those of us who don't stop and get out have less of a heart. It just means that we handle it differently.

A Voice of Calm & Reason...
...in this thread. Sandi_CA couldn't even know for 100% certainty it was a dog. What if it was a wolf? These things happen so fast you may not even get a really good look IN THE DARK at what you hit. Personally I'd never get out of the car unless I knew exactly what the situation was. Maybe she should have turned around to see if she could shine her headlights on the animal, but then hindsight is always 20/20. Maybe she should have called the authorities. Maybe she should have gone to a nearby home, but who on this board knows if there was one close by. Maybe the people in that area wouldn't take kindly to strangers knocking on their door after dark & might even have a dog to protect their property. I don't think there's a one of us who know for certain what we'd do under identical circumstances. You wouldn't know for sure until you're in the midst of it. It's VERY easy to be a Monday morning quarterback in situations like this & in my opinion Sandi's taken a LOT of unnecessary abuse over her actions or in this case, non-actions.

1) I am a dog lover. I love my so very much. 2) Calling the police? I am not sure that I would have thought of it, but I will in the future. Thanks for the suggestions. 3) It's commonly considered responsible to keep a pet contained. 4) Dark, dark roads, and God only knows what else.

Re: Who said she had to stand out alone on a country road?
All modern cell phones within the past couple of years have GPS tracking in them. One SIMPLE phone call is all it would have taken and the dogs exact location would have been pin pointed within seconds. Sandi would not have even had to get out of the SAFETY of her car, as she put it.
Sandi pointed out how VERY dark it was outside. What about the next car in that darkness and the dog left in the middle of the road -- there are more issues here than the disgust of not stopping, not calling and simply getting home -- what if the next car swerved to miss the dog and not as lucky with keeping the car on the road? What if the next car didn't have a single woman, but a car with children -- what if? what if? what if? One simple flippin' phone call is all it would have taken and Sandi would have been on her way. Or at least have some decency to move the poor dog to the edge of the road!!!

You are also assuming, it was a safe area, and that it realy was a dog. In my area, I lose my cell site for at least 1/2 hour or 3/4 hour either way. There have been many times that I thought something was a dog in the road to later find out it was a coyote. They run in packs, I would not get out to find out. Other times I have had to swerve to miss cattle of all sizes. My area also has mountain lions, bears, etc.

Carolyn and Others that comment without Facts
You all seem to making that Monday morning quarterback call. You are assuming facts which are not know. You assume it was someone's loved pet when it could have been a rabid stray or worse yet a coyote or other large wild animal. You also make the assumption that there was cell service available despite the fact that she said it was back country roads. Some of you have also made the assumption that the animal in question was now laying in the middle of the road making it a hazzard for the next driver coming down the road. One of you even said that the next car could have had children in it? That next car could have had 3 clowns it so playing the what if game is Truely pointless! Those of you that suggested she stop alone at night on a country road and go check the animals condition are just plain stupid! The animal was dead or badly injured and if the later it could have crawled off the road or been thrown into the ditch so to suggest that she check the animal is not an option for someone with their own safety in mind.

Charm, If you want to play just let me know but I doubt you are up to the challenge. I believe we already covered the stopping and getting out to check on the country road...STUPID The Calling well we do not know if cell service was available at the accident site..Calling later would not have been alot of help as she may not have know exactly where along the road the accident took place. You are also assuming that she did not call later to report the accident to the local sheriff's department later this morning since she only made a single post early this morning. I will instead wait to see any follow up post she makes.
Yes she said it was a big black dog and we do not know if that was someone's pet or a rabid stray so lose the pet owners mentality and try using some objectivity and try not rushing to make a judgement on someone!

A phone call to the police or animal control immediately would have been so easy and could have saved the life of this animal, or quickly helped to put them out of their misery. I think it's just great that all of you can be certain how you'd have handled this, but I'll be honest and tell you folks that as much as my babies are in fact BABIES to me, I cannot say for certain that I would have done any more than be shaken to pieces, sad, sick, and frightened in her situation.
Honest to God, calling the police would not have been my first thought. I am so glad we had this dicussion so that I can think of it if (May God prevent it) I find myself there. Now, here's one time I really feel someone is getting kicked unnecessarily.

I am a dog lover...my Golden Retriever would not be out in the middle of nowhere running around that late at night. The dog ran off....and was a big one. I couldn't have picked it up if I tried, or if I was able to chase and catch it. I was simply scared to death, and thankful my car could still be driven, as this was really out in middle of nowhere. This was not in a town or city, in which case I would have definitely stopped and gotten help. Give it a break guys, no need to hang me.

Sorry Sandi... I guess I was thinking the worst.
I imagined the poor dog lying in the road needing help and I guess I created my own scenario with my own dog and my own kids... I'm sure you did what you felt was best in the situation you were in. Again, sorry... I don't want to hang anyone or feed a flame. Poppy

Sandi, a lot of grief would have been avoided if you had mentioned that the dog was up and running after you hit it! You, (to me anyway) sounded cold in your original post. I did not have the feeling that you saw it run, only that you did not stop to see if it was ok. As far as this discussion goes, I'm done. Also glad that although shaken up, you are ok.

Are you sure it was even a dog? I hit a racoon (or badger?) once on my way home that looked like a dog in my rearview mirror, after the fact. I didn't see it until after I hit it and from the side of the impact, it must have run right in front of my car (mostly under the tires, so it didn't do too much damage). This was on a major road (w/ 50 mph posted speed limit...)about a quarter of a mile from my home (which is NOT rural). I was so upset at the thought of hitting someone's family pet that I made the several U-turns necessary to retrace my steps to check it out. It was definitely dead - and definitely a wild animal.
This was late in the evening on what is normally a busy road. I was pretty shaken up by the experience without being in the middle of nowhere, so I can only imagine how you must have felt. People who love their pets should keep them secure - even in the boondocks! (I have two elderly cats neither of which would likely be alive if I let them loose. The only time they leave my home is in a cage on the way to the vet!)
